Hei kaikki,

välitän verkkoon saamaani informaatiota aivan Norjan pohjoisimmassa
nurkassa (katso karttakuva alla) olevasta lintukohteesta.

Slettnesin nimen kärjen ohi virtaa keväisin suunnattomia määriä erityisesti
ruokkilintuja, kihuja sekä kuikkalintuja itään. Määristä saa alla olevasta
tekstistä hyvän käsityksen. Tietääkseni moni liiton jäsen on käynyt
tutustumassa paikkaan, jopa itse P. Komi, joten aivan tuntematon lintukohde
Slettnes ei ole suomalaisillekaan. Paikka on erinomainen lintujen
valokuvauksesta kiinnostuneille, sen rikkaan pesimalinnuston johdosta.

Alkuperäisen viestin lähettäjän Kåre Gripin sähköpostiosoite on alla, ja
hän antaa mielellään lisätietoa paikasta. Lisäksi hän tarjoaa
retkeilijöiden käyttöön kohtuuhintaista majoitusta. Kåre itse on jo
eläkkeellä, hän ei toimi ainakaan ensisijaisesti liiketoiminta mielessä,
vaan on itsekin kova lintumies ja haluaa, että alueen muuttomääristä
saataisiin lisää tietoa tehokkaan muutonseurannan avulla. Kåre
puhuu/kirjoittaa englantia hyvin, kuten alla olevasta tekstistä ilmenee.

Alla on lisäksi sähköposti- ja kotisivuosoite World Wildlife
Ecostation-nimiselle yhdistykselle, joka tekee alueella ympärivuotista
tutkimustyötä. Kotisivu on nyt vielä norjankielinen, mutta ensi vuonna on
tulossa englannin kielinen versio.

Toivottavasti viestini tavoittaa useita kiinnostuneita. Viestiä voi

Well, Slettnes ifs for sure a brilliant area to explore, as it is a
sub Arctic area, and contains both interesting migrating birds,
breeders and some cool rarities passing by now and then.

The best time to explore the area is during the migration and breeding
season. The migrtion time is best in May and September. The breeding
time is best from mid June to July.

Between 10th to 15th of May we have some huge numbers of Pomarine
Skuas and Yellow-billed Divers migrating towards east. The best days
we count over 1000 Pom's and some hundred White-bills.If the wind is
right, normally from north, many birds may approach close to the
shore. Away from that Gulls and Auk species migrate in hundreds of
thousands towards east.

During the breeding season you'll find around 50 breeding species. The
main attraction is the biggest "colony" of Arctic Skuas to be found in
Norway (around 300 pairs). Further on you'll find interesting species
as Little Stints, Whimbrels, Red-necked Phalaropes, Ruddy Turnstones,
Red- and Black-throated Divers, Gyr Falcons, Rough-legged Buzzard,
Red-throated Pipit, Lapland Bunting etc. The Snowy Owl sometimes breed
close by, but not annualy.

If you need more detailed information, you can contact the World
Wildlife Ecostation who do have researchers staying around Slettnes
the whole year. They are always updated on the locel changes and

There will be an english version coming up in January 2009.

For overnight stays, I'll recommend you to stay at Slettnes
Lighthouse. We can accomodate around 25 people. The price is 200NOK pr
person each night. Food might be bought from our local shop, and
dinner is possible to get at Gamvik Guesthouse.
