Subject: [EBN] Request: Rare Birds in Finnmark, Norway 2000-2007

Request: Rare birds in Finnmark, Norway 2000-2007

In many ways Finnmark in the very north of Norway is a peculiar county.
There are few resident birders, but every spring and summer a significant
number of birdwatchers are visiting from all over the world. During the last
few years we have received reports from e.g. Italy, Switzerland, Germany,
USA, Canada and Australia, in addition to our Nordic neighbouring countries.
In particular there are many Finnish birdwatchers and ornithologists
visiting our northern coast. Finnmark is huge - more than 72.000 square
kilometres - and a number of rare birds are probably never discovered. The
records of many species are concentrated to a few locations where there are
resident birdwatchers. Therefore, all records from occasional visitors are
extremely important for the understanding of seasonal and geographical bird
distribution.

The latest report from the regional rarity committee (LRSK Finnmark) was
published back in 2000. This is already a long time ago and the undersigned
is now working on a new faunistic report primarily presenting records from
2000 until 2007, but also a few older unpublished records. The report will
be written in English and made available on the Internet.

We have already received more than 2500 relevant records from the period
2000-2007. Thanks to all of you! However, we have reasons to believe that
there are much more out there.
If you have visited Finnmark (e.g the Varanger Peninsula or the Pasvik
Valley) during the last eight years, please send me your trip reports or a
list of your most interesting records before December 31st 2007. Please
notice that sightings of the rarest species require a description or some
other documentation to be accepted.

* Report guide for LRSK Finnmark 2001-2007 (in Norwegian):
