Petoruutuseurannan mukaan helmipöllön kanta on pienentynyt jo pitkään tahtia 2,4% vuodessa (LINNUT-vuosikirja 2017).<br>
Eli ei niitä enää kovin montaa ole, varsinkin Etelä-Suomesta laji on häviävä. <br>
Suuri vuosien välinen vaihtelu tosiaan sekoittaa kokonaiskuvan saamista.<br>
Lapin tilanne ( LLY) on Suomen huonoimmin tunnettu, täällä kun ketään muuta ei kiinnosta petolintujen ruutuseuranta.<br>

<div id="signature">Ainakin lintuatlaksen mukaan helmipöllö (3000–8000 paria) on vasta neljänneksi runsain pöllö varpus- (4000–10 000), suo- (3000–10 000) ja sarvipöllön (2000–10 000) jälkeen minimi- ja maksimiarvion keskiarvon perusteella. Toki lintuatlas on yli kahdeksan vuotta vanha, eikä luvut mahda olla ajantasaiset – onko muuten olemassa sivustoa, josta löytyy tuoreempaa tietoa?</div>

<p style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3"><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="2"><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman"><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman"><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman">Helmipöllö on Suomen runsaslukuisin pöllö, mutta kanta kuitenkin vaihtelee vuodesta toiseen myyrätilanteen mukaan. Lapissa pari viime vuotta ovat olleet pöllöjen osalta hiljaiseloa. Myyrät ovat olleet todella vähissä ja se on heijastanut myös koukkunokkien määriin. Nyt myyrien määrä on lähtenyt selvään nousuun ja pöllöjä on ruvennut näkymään ja varsinkin helmipöllöjä myös kuulumaan.</font></font></font></font></font></p>
<p style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3"><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="2"><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman"><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman"><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman"><font face="Times New Roman"><font color="#000000">Helmipöllö on metsien asukki. Sitä tavataan Lapissa kaikkialla, paitsi tunturialueilla. Mieluisinta elinympäristöä sille ovat kosteat kuusikkokorvet. Se ei karsasta muunkaan sorttisia metsiä, kunhan ruokaa ja sopiva kolo pesimiseen löytyy. Kolopesijänä se käyttää hyväkseen </font> <font color="#000000">muun muassa palokärjen kovertamia koloja, mutta asettuu mieluusti pesimään myös sopivan kokoiseen pönttöön. Helmipöllö ei vierasta ihmistä ja voi asettua ihan pihapiiriinkin pesimään, jos sopiva pönttö sille löytyy. Eikä ihan tavatonta ole pesiminen piharakennuksen rakenteissakaan.</font></font></font></font></font></font></font></p>
<p style="margin:0cm 0cm 0pt"><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="3"><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman" size="2"><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman"><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman"><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman"><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman"><font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman">Helpoiten helmipöllö on havaittavissa pimeän laskeuduttua kuuluvasta soidinäänestä. ”Pu-pu-pu-pu” kaikuu tuolloin koiraan kuuluttaessa reviiriään ja houkutellessa naarasta valitsemalleen pesäpaikalle. Vanha koiras yrittää sinnitellä reviirillään läpi vuoden, naaraat sen sijaan vaeltavat ruokatilanteen mukaan. Ne asettuvat aloilleen sinne missä ruokaa on tarpeeksi pesinnän onnistumiseen.</font></font></font></font></font></font></font></p>

Tarkoitus on selvittää kuinka paljon helmareita alueellamme on ja mitenkä määrä on jakaantunut yhdistyksen eri alueiden kesken. Lisäksi kiinnostaa erityisesti kuinka pitkä lajin soidinaika on eli kuinka pitkälle keväällä puputtavia koiraita kuullaan. Tietenkin kaikki pesintään viittaavat havainnot ovat tervetulleita. Seurannan vastuuhenkilönä toimii Ismo Kreivi.</font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></p>

Retket kannattee suunnata sellaisille paikoille, missä liikenteen melu ei häiritse havainnointia. Jos liikutaan autolla, pysähdellään sopivilla paikoilla muutaman kilometrin välein kuulostelemaan huutelevia pöllöjä. Parasta aikaa tähän toimintaan on meidän alueellamme maaliskuun alusta huhtikuun alkuun. Liikkeelle kannattee lähteä pimeän laskeuduttua. Toki muutamat pöllölajit ovat mieluiten äänessä heti auringon laskeuduttua(mm varpuspöllö ja huuhkaja). Tämän takia voi pöllöretkelle suunnata jo hämärässä. LLY tulee tulevana keväänä järjestämään pöllöjen kuunteluretkiä ainakin Rovaniemellä.</font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></p>

Vesistöjen varsilla olevissa telkänpöntöissä pesii hyvinä myyrävuosina paljon helmareita. Tuota kokoluokkaa olevat pöntöt ovat ihan sopivia helmipöllönkin asunnoksi. Toki niille voi rakennella ihan omiakin kortteeripaikkoja. Tuolloin lentoaukoksi riittää </font> <font color="#000000">noin 80 mm. Pönttö kannattee rakentaa sisätiloiltaan tarpeeksi suureksi, jotta poikaset mahtuvat siellä isoinakin köllöttelemään.
