Otsikko: [EuroTwitch] Chestnut Bunting (Emberiza rutila) in Finland
Vastaanottaja: megabirds at yahoogroups.com
A first calendar year Chestnut Bunting (maybe a male) was ringed yesterday
at Uusikaupunki, Finland (west coast). The bird was still present this
morning. This constitutes the first record for Finland. Being a 1cy bird
gives it a fair change to make it to the A category when eventually handled
by the Finnish Rarities Committee.
Personally it seemed to me that the bird was (at least partly) in juvenile
plumage (as was the bird observed in Norway) but this may need further
study. Rare birds (Lewington, Alström, Colston) states that the juvenile
plumage is moulted before autumn migration but it also notes the Norwegian
record.
The bird also made it to the national TV last night but as far as I know
there are no photos of the bird on the net yet (but there will surely be
later on).
Best regards,
Martin

Prevous records of the species from Europe are from the Netherlands, Norway,
Spain, Malta and the Great Britain but many of them have been considered to
be escapes, especially +1cy birds in the summer. Rare birds list the
following records:
Netherlands 5.11.1937 female
Norway 13-15.10.1974 juvenile
Yugoslavia 10.10.1987 1st-winter male
Malta xx.11.1983 1st-winter male
As a Spanish record is not mentioned perhaps it was made after the book was
published in 1991.
UK records (all considered to be possible escapes):
Foula 9-13.6.1974 adult male
Isle of May 11.6.1985 female
Fair Isle 15-16.6.1986 1st-summer male
Bardsey Is 18-19.6.1986 1sr-summer male
and one more:
Adult female, Out Skerries, Shetland, 2-5 September 1994. Identification
accepted but the species is still commonly imported and no case was found
for upgrading from category D. (Source: http://www.bou.org.uk/recrep24.html)

Chestnut Bunting Emberiza rutila
Status and distribution VAGRANT or ESCAPE Breeds in south-central &
south-eastern Siberia and northern parts of Mongolia and China, probably
also Ussuriland.
In Aug moves to wintering areas in southern China and Indochina, returning
in May-Jun.
Fairly common in the cage-bird trade and records from the Western Palearctic
are usually regarded as escapes. Recorded in the Netherlands and Norway, the
former Yugoslavia, Malta and Spain.
In Britain recorded 4 times in Jun, twice on Shetland, once on the I of May
and once on Bardsey, all rarity hotspots but these birds are usually
considered escapes. One in Sep 1994 is more likely to be a genuine vagrant
but none are currently accepted.
Habitat Open forest with undergrowth, coniferous, mixed or often alder or
birch and commonly on hillsides or ridges. More open areas in winter along
woodland edges and clearings, cultivated land with hedgerows and stubble
fields.
