Aranaud Da Silva Saksan Max Planck Instituutista etsii edelleen tutkimusavustajaa huolehtimaan valosaastetutkimuksen Oulun
tutkimupaikoista. Arnaud tulee itse Ouluun opastamaan avustajaa tukimuslaitteiston käytössä, mutta avustajan on mahdollista jatkaa
myöhemmin aineiston analysoinnin parissa Saksassa ja ainakin työsopimuksen pääsee kirjoittamaan Saksaan! Palkkaus on n. 1400 euroa
ja muut maastokulut (tarvitatessa mm. vuokra-auto) katetaan. Katso lisää alla olevasta hakemuksesta.
Lintujen laulut hallitsevan kannattaa tarttua hyvään tilaisuuteen; kesätöitä pidempi pesti, kansainvälistä kokemusta ja kuitenkin
itsenäinen työ!

FIELD ASSISTANT needed for light pollution project for the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology
Field work location: University of Oulu, Oulu, Finland.
Analysis location: Max Planck Institute for Ornithology, Seewiesen, Germany
Duration: max. 6 months (from beginning of March to end of August 2014).
Project coordinators: Prof. Dr. Bart Kempenaers http://www.orn.mpg.de/2622/Department_Kempenaers and his PhD student Arnaud Da Silva http://www.orn.mpg.de/206596/Arnaud_Da_Silva.
Job description: the field project will consist of (1) selecting five non-urban field sites with artificial night lighting and five forested areas near Oulu, (2) placing automated song recorders at each of these sites, and (3) check the recorders and replace the batteries during a 6-week recording period. The aim is to record the dawn song of common songbird species such as the Great Tit (Parus major), the Blue Tit (Cyanistes caeruleus), the Common Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs), the European Robin (Erithacus rubecula), and the Common Blackbird (Turdus merula). The assistant will be in charge of field site search and selection (in March, with the help of the PhD student). She/He will subsequently set up and monitor the automated recorders at the field sites during the recording period (April-May), measure light intensity at the artificially lighted sites, and carry out behavioural observations around dawn. After the field work is finished, the project consists of using software to extract data from the sound recordings. When of interest, the field assistant can also be involved in this part of the project, which takes place in Germany.
Qualifications: Candidates should have a BSc in Biology or a related field. They must have experience with field work and be able to work independently. For the analysis part of the project, the candidate must have good ornithological knowledge, especially regarding bird vocalizations. Experience with computer-assisted sound analysis is a bonus, but is not essential. The ideal candidate is highly motivated, well-organized, and careful about data collection. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license. Non-EU applicants should make sure that they are eligible for an extended stay in Europe.
This is a full-time position. The assistant will obtain a stipend to cover living expenses, and field transportation costs (e.g. rental car) will be reimbursed. For the second part of the project, we offer free accommodation in the guesthouse of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Seewiesen.
Review of the applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. To apply, please send (1) a cover letter detailing your motivation and relevant skills and (2) a resume or CV to Arnaud Da Silva (email: asilva at orn.mpg.de) as soon as possible. The successful candidate will be selected after an interview.
