The area proposed for the Desert Rose Convention Centre; Golf Course and 650 luxury homes is exactly covering this red zone. The special values include unique pristine landscapes with coastal vegetated hummocks, salt pans, dunes, gravel plains, high energy coast and sheltered intertidal rock pools; the most important breeding area in the world for a globally threatened bird species, Namibia’s flagship coastal breeding endemic the Damara Tern and a roosting and feeding area for up to 770 birds per kilometre of Palaearctic shore and sea birds during the summer months. The site is for these reasons a globally important bird area, the centre of the “Namib Flyway” (for over 2 million migratory birds each year), Namibia’s key ecologically and biologically significant marine area and zoned for zero impact within the Dorob National Park. Nowhere else in southern Africa is there a stretch of coast with these values.
