During spring 2007, the Language Centre is offering a module, Tutorial in
Academic Reporting (TAR, 2 ECTS-credits), aimed at providing support for
students who are currently working on a piece of academic writing (for
example, a seminar paper, undergraduate thesis or even a research
article) in English. The module can be completed as part of Tekniikan
englanti 3 (the compulsory English course) and its description is pasted
at the foot of this message. The description can also be found online at

</b></font><br>
<font face="Times New Roman, Times">This tutorial aims to help
participants produce an academic text. The paper should be part of a
student's own work, and could take the form of, for example, a thesis
proposal, part of a Master's thesis or a research article. <br>
</font><br>
<font face="Times New Roman, Times">The module includes two tutorials.
Prior to the first tutorial, the student submits the first draft of a
text (approximately 10-15 pages) for diagnostic analysis. The teacher
analyses the text and prepares detailed feedback. At the first tutorial,
the student is given advice on what changes are necessary in order to
improve the text and guidance about resources available for independent
work. The second tutorial is scheduled once the student's second draft
has been submitted and evaluated. At this tutorial, the student's text is
discussed further and additional advice is given for future independent
work. If necessary, the teacher may require further rewriting of the
text. <br>

<font face="Times New Roman, Times">While working on TAR, students keep
an informal language learning log to support their learning. This log is
submitted to the teacher at the end of the module.<br>

<font face="Times New Roman, Times">This module can be completed entirely
online if necessary, although this is not recommended. The teacher's
function is to help the student improve her/his writing skills. The
teacher is not responsible for editing the student's text for publication
or for submission to an authority.<br>
