From deep sea to bioreactor - Functional genomics of extremophile and
industrial microorganisms

Thomas describes his fascinating research on functional genomics and
proteomics of a wide range of microorganisms.
Especially interesting is his reasearch on direct proteomics of
internal microorganisms from tube worms which live in the near of black
smokers at the bottom of the oceans. A PhD student from Thomas'es
group had the chance to participate in an American excursion and could
dive with the only existing American submarine boat for research purposes
some 1000 m deep to collect the tube worms. The work will be published in
this week´s SCIENCE as a research paper.
Additionally, Thomas'es group has done pioneering work in the
proteomic and transcriptomic analysis of bioprocesses. These studies
gave a deep view inside the physiology and dynamic behaviour of
microorganisms in process environments, including large-scale
bioprocesses.
