Jokkmokk Winter Conference 2013
Sustainable Energy - Sustainable Living: Planning for Action
4 February - 7 February 2013

Jokkmokk Winter Conference on climate change, energy and
sustainable
development is an annual international forum for students,
decision
makers, entrepreneurs and opinion builders from Northern Europe,
North
America and Russia. The conference offers a natural meeting point
for
those working with climate change and an opportunity for developing
new strategies and initiatives for the North. The Saami perspective
and reindeer herding is an important pillar for the conference. The
recommendations and demands raised in the
conference are handed over and discussed with governmental
representatives from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Russia, Canada and
the
US (See below for further information and useful links).

The University of Oulu, through the Dept. of Process and
Environmental
Engineering, is organizing a trip to the conference including
transportation and guaranteed participation for up to 4 students
(Note
that the conference has no registration fee but, on the other hand,
has limited number of available places).

If you believe that attending the conference can benefit your
studies
and enrich you university portfolio, you are welcome to contact us.
Please write me an email (antonio.calo@oulu.fi) including a one
page
(ONE PAGE!) motivation letter with a short description of your
studies
and your primary motivation for attending the event.

Best regards,

Main issues 2013
A melting Arctic and the world's hunger for metals and energy are
leading to an increasing interest in exploring the Northern

At what costs is that to happen and how will it affect people? At
the
same time, a growing number of communities are working on
sustainable
energy and sustainable living solutions. The European Covenant of
Mayors and its thousands member municipalities committed to climate
protection are one example. Jokkmokk Winter Conference 2013 focuses
therefore on the following issues:

* A Planet under Stress: How much human activity can
the biosphere afford?
* Climate Change, Energy Production and the Arctic:
conflicts and solutions
* Covenant of Mayors: European municipalities planning
actions for
Sustainable Energy
* Traditional indigenous knowledge: A resource for
today's communities?

Why you should register

* Unique networking opportunities, skill sharing and up
to date
information about climate change, energy and the Arctic.
* Chance to establish mentor relationships with policy
maker and
sustainable development professionals
* Occasion to enjoy famous traditional Saami Jokkmokk
Winter
Market with more than 40.000 visitors each year
