<b>Short time forecasting of real-time CO2 emissions of the energy system</b><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">This position is in an EU project called Making city (</span><a href="http://makingcity.eu/the-project/"><span lang="EN-US">The MAKING-CITY project – Making City</span></a><span lang="EN-US">) project<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><i><span lang="EN-US">In this summer position, the applicant will familiarize him/her-self to different machine learning techniques that can be used for giving reliable short-term prediction of the CO2 content of the power system. Real
time CO2 emissions is becoming a big trend and information must become reliable when it reaches the end-user intended to use this information. Accounting for GHG for the present time has accumulated multiple validated methods, however end-users are interested
about what comes next. Therefore, short-term forecasting of the emissions in the country will have a critical role in raising awareness and drive the green attitude of end-users. The applicant will work with large dataset available from the research unit.
The applicant must be familiar with any of the following simulation platforms: MatLab, R or Python. By the end of the summer position, it is expected to have a running platform that can be deployed and communicated to end-users.

<b>Carbon offset solutions</b><br>
This position will contribute to the work of the University of Oulu’s Carbon Footprint Working Group (<a href="https://www.oulu.fi/en/projects/carbon-footprint-university-oulu">https://www.oulu.fi/en/projects/carbon-footprint-university-oulu</a>)<br>
<i>Finnish universities have committed to become carbon neutral by 2030. Looking at the current profile of the university’s carbon footprint, to reach this might require offsetting the emissions we cannot avoid. The job of this trainee will be to look for best
practices of research and educational institutes offsetting their emissions, review offset markets and other carbon sequestration opportunities, benchmark the practices of other relevant Finnish organizations and offer suggestions on how to select offset targets.
The trainee is to write a report on their work and also communicate the work results to both the CFWG and the university community. The trainee may also be asked to perform other academic tasks to the CFWG as well.<br>

<b>University of Oulu’s path to carbon neutrality</b><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">This position will also contribute to the work of the University of Oulu’s Carbon Footprint Working Group (<a href="https://www.oulu.fi/en/projects/carbon-footprint-university-oulu">https://www.oulu.fi/en/projects/carbon-footprint-university-oulu</a>)<br>
<i>In line with the 2030 carbon neutrality objective, the University of Oulu is to outline a path on how to achieve this. The responsibility of the trainee is to outline this path to 2030, including the expectation of halving the CF by 2025 (from 2019 levels).
The work of Trainee 3 is to be conducted in cooperation with Trainee 2. The path will also have to take into consideration the societal framework, e.g. the decarbonization targets of the Finnish energy system, potential strategies of external service providers,
aso. To this end the trainee will have to be familiar with current Scope 3 emission sources and service providers and potentially also contact them to establish their role in the roadmap. The trainee is to write a report on their work and also communicate
the work results to both the CFWG and the university community. The trainee may also be asked to perform other academic tasks to the CFWG as well.<br>

positions (such as ESE, smart grids courses), but students from other programmes can also apply. All positions are 2 months contracts, with the standard salary level for university trainees (~1500 euros).<o:p></o:p></span></p>
