<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:12.0pt">This course will form an introduction to a wide range of biological organisms and ecosystem processes that in different ways are active even during winter in northern terrestrial and freshwater
environments. It will study microbial activity in streams, soils, and groundwater, below the snow and ice. The snow and ice structure and function as a controlling factor for microbial activity as well as for grazing animals will be a focus. The microbial
activity is linked to greenhouse gas (CO2 and CH4) exchange between the ecosystems and the atmosphere, and the students will also be introduced to measurements of these activities and gas exchange as well as modeling approaches aimed
at scaling up greenhouse gas exchanges to a larger scale. It is all to be discussed in the light of ongoing climate change with winters warming and extreme events happening more frequently with episodic thaw-freeze events in the middle of the winter.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US" style="font-size:12.0pt">The course will be a mixture of lectures and excursions which will end with a group-based project work where the students get exposed to working in the field under challenging winter conditions
and present their own results based on the data collected during the course.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
