Dear Student,
TANDEM is a language learning and teaching project - developed by the Language Centre - in which foreign exchange students are paired up with Finnish-speaking Oulu students, so that each partner teaches his/her mother tongue to the other. The foreigner gets individual help and encouragement with his/her Finnish language learning (usually at the beginner level) and a personal guide to Finnish culture, while the Finn gets a chance to learn about a foreign language and culture, either as a beginner or as a more advanced learner.
The course description - in Finnish - can be read at http://www.oulu.fi/kielikeskus/opas_tandem.htm
We teachers usually find our Finnish participants from our own classrooms (you know we teach 7 foreign languages in our department) - but we also have a number of interested foreigners for whom it's harder to find Finnish partners.
If you would like to try learning POLISH, CZECH, ICELANDIC, SLOVAK, CHINESE, ARABIC, BULGARIAN or TURKISH as a voluntary course, please get in touch!
Thanks,
Heather Kannasmaa, TANDEM/English & TANDEM/"other languages" Language Centre, Oulu University
