Esimerkiksi tämän teemanumeron yhden artikkelin nimetön arvioija otti kohtalaisen tiukasti kantaa siihen, milloin todella voidaan puhua lasten ja nuorten tutkimuksesta. Hän kehotti kirjoittajaa miettimään, milloin lapsia tutkivasta teoksesta otettu viite sopii selittämään nuorisotutkimusta. Arvioija pani paitsi artikkelin kirjoittajan, myös minut miettimään asiaa. Kiitos sinulle nimettömänä pysyttelevä kollegani, tiedät kyllä kenelle kiitokset tässä kulkevat.**** Lapsuudentutkimus on asemoitunut ikään kuin nuorisotutkimuksen pikkusiskoksi. Kun molemmat teoretisoivat iän kulttuurisia ja sosiaalisia merkityksiä, niillä on väistämättä myös tämä keskinäinen ikäero. Lapsuudentutkimus on tutkimusalana nuorempi ja myös sen tutkimuskohteet ovat nuorempia. Perinteisesti lapsia on tutkittu institutionaalisissa ja virallisissa ympäristöissä, useimmiten päiväkodissa ja koulussa. Samaan aikaan isosisko on huidellut kavereidensa kanssa omilla teillään. Tuon riehakkaan isosiskon tekemisiä on lapsuudentutkimuksessa pidetty silmällä ja sen myötä tutkimuksen kohteiksi ovat tulleet myös pikkusiskon kaverit, heidän sosiaaliset ja kulttuuriset maailmansa sekä monet informaalit ilmiöt kuten esimerkiksi lasten kuluttaminen ja mediaympäristöt. Nyt, kun pikkusiskokin on varttunut, tutkimukselliset intressit ja metodologiset kiinnostuksen kohteet näyttävät leikkaavan entistä useammin. Monitieteisellä yhteiskuntatieteellisesti orientoituneella tutkimuskentällä, jossa erilaiset kultuurintutkimuksen, sukupuolentutkimuksen, tilan ja ruumiillisuuden problematisoinnit leikkaavat, yhteistyö alkaa olla luontevaa. Ilmiöt voivat saada erilaisia teoreettisia ja metodologisia painotuksia, mutta sosiaaliset, poliittiset ja kulttuuriset maailmat ovat jaettuja. Ehkä vielä niin ajateltuna, että jakaminen ymmärretään tässä sanan molemmissa merkityksissä: yhtäältä yhteisenä ja jaettuna, toisaalta erillisenä ja jaettuna.**** Osallistuminen on epäilemättä yksi tällainen jaettu alue ja siihen tässä teemanumerossa tartutaan. Huolimatta siitä, tai juuri siksi, että osallistuminen on jotensakin hämärä alue. Lasten ja nuorten osallistuminen on oikeus ja teoriassa tämä kutakuinkin noin ymmärretäänkin, mutta mitä se käytännössä tarkoittaa, ei ole niin selvää. Tie hyvistä aikomuksista ja periaatteista käytäntöjen tasolle ei aina ole ollut mutkaton. Enemmän on esimerkiksi arvioitu sitä, miten osallistumisesta voitaisiin tehdä lapsille ja nuorille palkitsevampaa, kun taas osallistumisen vaikutukset ovat jääneet vähemmälle huomiolle. Aloitteiden määrä kun ei ole tae lopputuloksesta. **** Ymmärrys osallistumisesta on perinteisesti rajoittunut instituutioihin ja rakenteisiin, joissa poliittisia päätöksiä tehdään, vaikka osallistuminen on vähä vähältä murentunut myös pieniksi ja henkilökohtaisemmiksi kysymyksiksi. Tällä on ollut seuraamuksia erityisesti nuorten osallistumisen tapoihin ja keinovalikoimiin, kun se on voinut tarkoittaa myös aikuisen auktoriteetin haastamista ja vastustamista. Lasten ja nuorten osallistuminen näyttää useimmiten asettuvan analyysin kohteeksi (aikuisten rakentamissa) institutionaalisissa kehyksissä. Niin myös tämän teemanumeron teksteissä. **** Vilja Laaksosen tekee artikkelissaan tutkimuskirjallisuuteen pohjautuvaa vertailevaa analyysia siitä, miten lasten osallistumista ja toimijuutta voidaan tukea vuorovaikutustaitoja kehittämällä. Ongelmanratkaisu, yhteistyö ja taito asettua toisen asemaan ovat tärkeitä taitoja lapselle, mutta vertaissuhteilla on vaikutusta myös myöhemmässä, nuoren ja aikuisen elämässä. Vertaissuhteet ymmärretään tässä yhtenä kehityksen kontekstina, jossa lapsi oppii osallistumisen avulla. **** Kristiina Eskelisen ja Noora Pyyryn artikkeleissa paneudutaan osallistaviin tutkimusmenetelmiin. Molempia artikkeleita ohjaa metodologinen mielenkiinto ja se, mitä osallistavat menetelmät tarkoittavat silloin, kun tutkimusta tehdään lasten ja nuorten kanssa. Avuksi otetaan kamerat ja kuvaajien tulkinnat valokuvista. Eskelinen analysoi koululaisten institutionalisoituja, aikuisten suunnittelemia, aikatauluttamia ja valvomia iltapäiviä sekä sitä, millaisen lähtökohdan nämä muodostavat lasten osallistumiselle. Lasten ottamat valokuvat kertovat usein siitä, minne aikuisten valvonta ei yllä, mutta mihin tutkija otetaan tällä kertaa mukaan. Pyyry tarkastelee teini-ikäisten tyttöjen tapoja tehdä hengailemalla kaupunkitilaa ja ei-organisoitua vapaa-aikaa omakseen. Artikkelissa rakennetaan ymmärrystä materiaalisesta, fyysisestä ja metaforisesta tilasta, samalla kun pohditaan tiedon vuorovaikutuksellista luonnetta ja paikantumista. Uuden tiedon tuottamisen ohella tavoitteena on saada tutkittavat itse pohtimaan asioita. Tutkijan interventio voi voimauttaa, mutta tutkija voi myös sokeutua asioiden joillekin puolille ja herättää jopa turhia toiveita.**** Leena Haanpään ja Piia af Ursinin artikkelissa tarkastellaan nuorten valmiutta ja kiinnostusta osallistua yhteiskunnalliseen päätöksentekoon heitä itseään koskevissa asioissa. Analyysi perustuu lomakekyselyyn ja osoittaa, että valtaosa vastaajista haluaa vaikuttaa jokapäiväisiin oman elämänsä asioihin. Tunne siitä, että tulee kuulluksi ja vakavasti otetuksi on tärkeää. Tosin tämä edellyttää sekä tietoa että myös mahdollisuutta osallistua. Sakari Suutarisen ja Kari Törmäkankaan artikkelissa siirrytään etäämmälle toimijuudesta tarkastelemaan osallistumisen rakenteita ja suomalaisten nuorten osallistumista eurooppalaisten vertailuaineistojen valossa. Erityisen kiinnostuksen kohteeksi kirjoittajat nostavat laittomaan toimintaan valmiit ja maahanmuuttajiin negatiivisesti suhtautuvat suomalaiset nuoret, heidän myönteisen suhtautumisen väkivallan käyttöön ja heidän määränsä lisääntymisen. **** Katsaus-osiossa Anu Alanko pohtii, miten alueellinen osallisuusryhmä toimii lasten ja nuorten osallistumisen tilana. Tiina Karhuvirta ja Sinikka Mäntysalo-Lamppu ottavat puheenvuorossaan kantaa näkymättömään ja hajuttomaan oppilaskuntatoimintaan. Lektioissa Tiina Nikkola kuvaa syyllisyyden kehittymistä syntipukki-ilmiöksi ja Minna Saarinen vammaisten nuorten jäämistä sivuun vertaisverkostoista. Lopuksi Noora Mäenpää arvioi tämänhetkistä lapsinäkökulmaista tutkimusta. **** Vaikka lasten ja nuorten osallisuutta haluttaisiinkin edistää, lehden kirjoituksista piirtyy vaikutelma, etteivät oppilaat pääse aidosti vaikuttamaan kouluarkeaan koskeviin päätöksiin. Siitä tässä teemanumerossa puhutaan.**** ** ** Ulla-Maija Salo**** ** ** ** ** *English summaries* ** ** *Peer Interaction Skills and Children’s Participation in a Peer Group. A multi-disciplinary literature review* *Vilja Laaksonen* The Finnish Journal of Youth Research**** (“Nuorisotutkimus”) Vol 30, (1), 3–19**** ** ** Participation as an active member of a children’s peer group requires acceptance by one’s peers. As children interact with their peers from an early age, problem-solving, co-operation, and being reciprocal are important skills for children to acquire even before they enter school. This article investigates how peer interaction skills, participation, and peer group dynamics have been studied in the multi-disciplinary research studies published during 1998–2009. Special attention is paid to children’s peer relationships and to the challenges, such as rejection and bullying, that can prevent active participation within a peer group. To date, little is known about how children’s developing peer interaction skills are connected to the bullying phenomenon. It should also be noted that experiences of harmful peer relationships during childhood may have lingering negative effects in adolescence. This article seeks to increase understanding of how children’s participation can be supported by the development of children’s peer interaction skills. **** ** ** *Participation in After-School Activities. The voice of images * *Kristiina Eskelinen* The Finnish Journal of Youth Research**** (“Nuorisotutkimus”) Vol 30, (1), 20–34**** ** ** This article explores the concept of after-school activities for school children. The aim is to determine to what extent supervised and controlled after-school activities encourage the participation of children and how it is evident in photographs taken by them. The article examines the visual ethnographic data collected with a group of children (37) participating in after-school activities in May 2010. Analysing methods are explored and a number of preliminary analyses using a relational and spatial lens are presented, while reflecting on the children’s participation in afternoon activities. The term ‘the voice of images’ is intended to convey a kind of photo elicitation, a way of looking at the photos and talking about them with the children, while reading and listening to them. The data contain a large number of photographs from the school grounds where children spend several hours a day. The images portray different types of action. At the same time, they also convey a sense of other possibilities and spaces for participation. An attempt is made to analyse these diverse actions (and participation) – doing, moving, being, waiting, facing and communicating – through the concepts of territory and territoriality. Participation in after-school activities would appear to be created through social and spatial relations between children and adults and between different groups of children, boundary communications and inclusion. **** ** ** *Participatory Methods in Youth Research* *Noora Pyyry* The Finnish Journal of Youth Research**** (“Nuorisotutkimus”) Vol 30, (1), 35–53**** This article discusses youth participation in research and describes the methods that can be used to promote it. The discussion draws on the ongoing debate about ethics in youth research. The methods discussed are part of research which aims to shed light on teenage girls’ hanging-out practices. The methodology is informed by feminist and ethnographic research practice, and participatory research epistemology. The choice of methods can be understood in the ethical light of understanding young people as active subjects in society. Their place in the research is thus central and the researcher has endeavoured to work with them rather than on them. The emphasis is on participation, which allows for multiple interpretations, and knowledge is thus seen as situated and co-constructed. The aim is to find alternative ways of producing scientific ‘data’, based on the young people’s participation in the research; they took part in the data production and interpretation, which continued throughout the field work. As a part of the project, the participants conducted peer interviews and took photographs of urban spaces of special importance for them. The photos were later used to stimulate interview interaction. Participatory mental maps were produced collaboratively and used in group interviews. The methods and outcomes of the project were evaluated together with the participants. The aim is to further develop methods for capturing the marginal knowledge of young people, and for approaching everyday life and the ways in which teenagers are active and socially productive in their urban environments. **** ** ** *Youngsters’ Participation in Focus: A survey of the societal participation of adolescents in Southwest Finland* *Piia-Kaisa Ursin & Leena Haanpää* The Finnish Journal of Youth Research**** (“Nuorisotutkimus”) Vol 30, (1), 54–69**** ** ** This article examines the participatory practices of young people, their interests, as well as their opportunities and abilities to participate in both social decision-making and in matters relating to their own lives. The study is based on data collected at the Turku Institute for Child and Youth Research at the University of Turku in a project called Youngsters in focus. The project aims to strengthen the participation of children and young people. Within the project, a survey targeted at pupils in the 6th and 9th grade was carried out at schools in Southwest Finland in autumn 2010. The collected data produced diverse information on the living conditions, thoughts and desires of children and young people in these areas. Respondents totalled 5,305 altogether. Findings showed that youngsters wanted to take part in decision-making at school. However, they were less willing to participate in other issues outside of school. The main predictors behind the young people’s participation were their own interest and a politically active role model in their social environment. Unwillingness to participate was linked to a lack of interest, a lack of ability and a lack of confidence about whether they would really be listened to. **** ** ** *The Connection between Young People’s Readiness for Immigrant-Critical Activism and their * *Participation at School* Sakari Suutarinen & Kari Törmäkangas**** The Finnish Journal of Youth Research**** (“Nuorisotutkimus”) Vol 30, (1), 70–89**** ** ** The main purpose of this article is to study changes in civil obedience and negative attitudes towards immigrants among 14-year-old adolescents by using two international sample studies. The first of these studies, by the IEA (the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement) was accomplished in 1999 (CIVED) and the other in 2009 (ICCS). The Finnish results were compared with the Nordic countries and with the majority of European countries. It was found that the number of adolescents who are willing to commit illegal activities or who have negative attitudes towards immigrants has clearly increased in Finland and in certain other countries, such as England. These young people are called immigrant-critical activists. Finnish immigrant-critical activists displayed less negative attitudes towards the use of violence than peers of the same age in general. More negativity was demonstrated by this group when it came to school functions such as relations with teachers, freedom of expression and overall participation in school activities. Few home background variables were found that would differentiate the group from other pupils. The only difference concerned parental interest in politics, which was less apparent among the immigrant-critical group. The main aim of this article is to explain the influence of school circumstances on illegal social activity (spray-painting protest slogans, blocking traffic or occupying public buildings).
