Some safety neglects in laboratories

Dear Kieppi-people, There are some safety neglects in laboratories I have been notified of (with photos). Scalpels (without any protective cover) placed in beakers sharp end up and lying on tables. Needles without and with covers lying on tables. There is no excuse for this. Better laboratory practices are required from everybody, from post docs to trainees and visitors. Do not leave sharp items around. This is to protect those who use these items, others working in the same laboratory, and the cleaning personnel. Please, have a look around and see whether there are things to be improved, and fix them. Thank you! (In English below) Maailman nivelrikkotutkimusyhdistyksen OARSI:n seuraava puheenjohtaja, Ali Mobasheri, saapuu puhumaan Kontinkankaalla pidettävään Brown Bag -lounasseminaariin tiistaina 12.3. klo 12 - 14. Mobasherin osion otsikkona on Biomarkers of extracellular matrix degradation and repair in osteoarthritis: lessons from fibrotic diseases. Seminaari pidetään salissa 101A (Leena Palotie -sali). Brown Bag -lounasseminaarit ovat kaikille avoimia tilaisuuksia, joissa päästään tutustumaan eri tieteenalojen uusimpaan tutkimukseen ja käymään poikkitieteellistä keskustelua aiheiden ympärillä. Seminaarit on yleensä järjestetty Linnanmaalla, mutta tällä kertaa Brown Bag tuodaan Kontinkankaalle lääketieteellisen aiheen vuoksi. Tilaisuudessa on tarjolla lounasta. The President-elect of osteoarthritis research society international (OARSI) Ali Mubasheri visits the University of Oulu on the 12th of March. There will be a special edition of Brown Bag lunch seminars on Kontinkangas campus, where Mubasheri will give a keynote on the topic Biomarkers of extracellular matrix degradation and repair in osteoarthritis: lessons from fibrotic diseases. Alkuviikosta viemärin rakennetta muutettiin, jotta se olisi vähemmän altis tukkeutumaan. Tänään viemärissä oli taas tukos. Endoskopiassa tukoksen syyksi paljastui sininen nitriilikumihanska. Edes paperipyyhkeitä ei saa huuhtoa alas viemäristä, kumihanskoista puhumattakaan. Korjatkaapa tapanne! There has been a number of drain blockades in the Pharmacology 3rd floor toilets. Earlier his week the plumbers modified the drain to make it less susceptible to blockades. Today there was a blockade again. Endoscopy revealed a blue nitrile rubber glove causing the blockade. Even paper towels should never be flushed down the toilet - not to speak about rubber gloves. Please behave! BR, Eero

Hei muistattehan ottaa puhtaiden tiskien kärryt mukaanne huoneesta 236B tai käytävältä, kun tuotte tiskiä Kiepin välinehuoltoon. Kiepin välinehuollon tilat ovat ahtaat ja useita päiviä tiloissa olevat puhdastavarakärryt haittaavat tiloissa työskentelyä. He will give a presentation on "Developing novel antibiotic drugs - How are we going to find new targets and compounds?" on Thursday, 28th Feb. at 12.15 (AT115A, Linnanmaa).
