PhD student position in regulatory genomics
Biocenter Oulu is the forefront organization of biosciences and molecular medicine in the University of Oulu, Finland. The functional genomics laboratory of Dr. Gonghong Wei at the Center is inviting applications for a PhD student position in gene regulation and regulatory genomics.
Project The research group focuses on fundamental roles of the ETS family transcription factors in the cell growth control, prostate cancer and leukemia. There are nearly 30 ETS members in the human and mouse genomes, respectively. We aim to address on a genome-wide scale how the oncogenic ETS family members contribute targeting specificity in the specific cancer-type context? What mechanisms confer the unique biological roles of the ETS factors in vivo? We will apply ChIP-seq, FAIRE-seq, DNase-seq and 3C-derived methods in combination with the next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology to map ETS cistrome, epigenetic profile, open chromatin context and long-range chromatin interactome. We will also perform RNA-seq/Affymetrix chip to capture the transcriptome landscape/expression profiling after perturbation of individual ETS member. The resulting regulatory genomic data will be further applied to determining the functional genetic variants identified by genome-wide association studies. The critical ETS targets of clinical interest will be deeply validated in multiple animal models including transgenic and knockin/out mice. Conditions In accordance with the requirements for a PhD student in the University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS), the position is a full-time PhD student for up to four years for the completion of doctoral training. The salary will be paid according to levels 1 - 4 of the university salary scale for teaching and research staff, in addition to which the PhD student will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.
Qualifications According to the requirements for admission to the UniOGS, the candidate should hold an MSc or an equivalent degree, granted by a recognized or accredited university. As a minimum requirement for admission to the UniOGS, the above-mentioned degree must have been completed with good grades (at least 60% of maximum grade, or 3/5). The candidate should have a proof of sufficient language skills in English. An ideal candidate should have received the MSc degree in molecular cell biology or a related field, and have expertise in gene transcriptional regulation, mouse models or bioinformatic skills.
