Hi all,

This spring there will be some changes to the existing XP machines we have here in Kieppi.

I will try to upgrade all the XP machines I possibly can to Windows 7. Some of the machines will removed from network access permanently or alternatively they will be connected to the virtual network mentioned in this bulletin.

Microsoftin Windows XP –käyttöjärjestelmän tuki päättyy

Microsoft lopettaa Windows XP -käyttöjärjestelmänsä tukemisen 8.4.2014. Tämän jälkeen Windows XP:lle ei ole enää saatavilla minkäänlaista tukea eikä käyttöjärjestelmäpäivityksiä, jotka auttaisivat suojaamaan tietokoneen tietoturvaa.

Windows-versiolle, jotka eivät ole Microsoftin tuen piirissä, ei enää toimiteta ohjelmistopäivityksiä Microsoftin Windows Updaten tai yliopiston oman päivityspalvelun kautta. Tietokoneet ovat tuen päättymisen jälkeen alttiita virus-, vakoiluohjelma- ja muille haittaohjelmahyökkäyksille, joilla tietokoneesta voidaan esimerkiksi varastaa tietoja tai valjastaa se rikolliseen toimintaan, esimerkiksi roskapostin lähetykseen tai laittomien tiedostojen jakamiseen.

Windows XP -työasemat Oulun yliopiston verkossa

Oulun yliopistossa sovelletaan seuraavaa käytäntöä Windows XP –työasemiin

1. Windows XP –työasemat on korvattava Windows 7 –työasemilla.

2. Vanhentuneet tieteelliset sovellukset päivitetään uusiin versioihin, mikäli sellainen on saatavilla, jolloin käyttöjärjestelmä voidaan korvata Windows 7 –käyttöjärjestelmällä.

3. Tutkimuslaitekäytössä olevia Windows XP:tä ja muita ei-tuettuja käyttöjärjestelmiä varten perustetaan oma virtuaaliverkko, jossa on rajoitetut verkkopalvelut:

• Työasemalla ei pääse internetiin eikä yliopiston sisäisiin palveluihin

o Pääsy virustorjuntasovelluksen päivityksiä varten on kuitenkin sallittu

• Työaseman kytkeminen Univ- tai Student –toimialueisiin on estetty

• Tutkimusdataa on mahdollista tallentaa verkkojakoihin

• Muistitikkujen ja ulkoisten kovalevyjen käyttö ei-tuetuissa työasemissa on kielletty

• Tulostaminen on sallittu ainoastaan työasemaan kytkettyihin tulostimiin

4. Windows XP:tä voi ajaa yllä mainituin rajoituksin myös virtualisoituna, esimerkiksi VMware Playerillä.

Support for Microsoft Windows XP is ending

Microsoft is ending support for Windows XP on 8th of April 2014. After this there will be no support available for Windows XP at all, which may endanger the security of one’s computer.

Unsupported versions of Windows will no longer receive software updates either from Microsoft Windows Update or from the university’s own update service. After the support ends, computers are exposed to viruses, spyware and malware which may e.g. steal data from one’s computer or harness it for criminal activity, e.g. spamming or sharing illegal material.

Windows XP workstations in the University of Oulu

The following policy is applied to Windows XP workstations in the University of Oulu

1. Windows XP workstations must be updated or replaced with Windows 7 workstations.

2. Outdated scientific software will be updated to new versions if available. This usually gives a possibility to update Windows XP to Windows 7.

3. A dedicated virtual network will be created for Windows XP and other unsupported operating systems. If it’s not possible to update the operating system, workstations will be moved to the virtual network. Its functionalities have been limited in the following ways:

· The workstation cannot connect to the internet or university’s internal services o Only connection to update antivirus software is allowed

· The workstation may not be joined to Univ or Student domains

· Data will be saved to the Lipasto or to the own disk servers of the departments

· Use of usb sticks or external hard drives is forbidden in unsupported workstations

· Printing is allowed only for the local printers

4. Windows XP can be run virtualized with the limitations mentioned above, e.g. in VMware Player.
