Dear colleagues, It is our pleasure to invite you to submit your abstract for Kaamos Symposium 2020. Due to current global situation, we will be organizing the conference online via Zoom this year. When: December 9 - 11, 2020 Where: Zoom This year’s our invited speakers are: * Prof. Tom Gilbert (University of Copenhagen) * Prof. Jochen Wolf (LMU Munich) * Prof. Alexandre Roulin (University of Lausanne) * Dr Clemens Küpper (Max Planck Institute for Ornithology) There will also be a workshop led by Dr Clemens Küpper and Dr Luke Eberhart-Phillips on “Open Access databases and large datasets” on the 11th December. As you are all aware, Ph.D. students get credits for attending and presenting a talk or a poster at the symposium and therefore students from all study levels are encouraged to attend! Together with the nearby Käldamäki site, it is among the most intriguing Iron Age mysteries in Northern Europe. Both sites comprise unburnt human and animal remains, fragmented and scattered within a wetland, starkly contrasting with the burial heritage of its time. Both sites yearn for modern laboratory analysis. Recent ancient DNA (aDNA) studies suggested a relatedness between the Levänluhta people and the present-day Sámi. However, the interpretation relied on a study of merely four individuals out of the ~100 human individuals awaiting for molecular analysis in the wetlands. So far, the other marshy graveyard, Käldamäki, has undergone no aDNA research at all. In this project, we aim not only to conceive the origin of the Levänluhta and Käldamäki peoples, but also to investigate their subsistence and disease (infections) status by analyzing their stable isotopes, and virus bio-portfolio, respectively. Dear colleagues, this week's Biology Thursday Seminar (29th Oct, 12:15, zoom link below) will be given by Dr. Marko Prous, University of Tartu, Dept. of Zoology, on "Nanopore sequencing to replace Sanger" Abstract High-throughput sequencing methods (Illumina, PacBio, Oxford Nanopore) have become routine in many laboratories. Nevertheless, low-throughput Sanger sequencing is still widely used in smaller scale projects, but also in large-scale DNA barcoding efforts of large number of specimens based on a single or a few genes. It will be argued that Sanger sequencing can be replaced with Nanopore sequencing as long as tens of specimens and several genes or hundreds of specimens and one gene are sequenced in one experiment. With Nanopore, fragments of any length (DNA or RNA) can be sequenced and intraindividual variants (due to heterozygosity, heteroplasmy, or paralogy) can be resolved. Nanopore has a reputation of low sequencing accuracy, but this has significantly improved and is now mature enough to get consensus sequences with very similar accuracy to other technologies (likely even better compared to Sanger). Hei, Tiedoksi tallenne sähköisen tenttijärjestelmän Examin koulutuksesta opetushenkilökunnalle (29.9.). Lyhyesti muutoksista sähköisen tentin sääntöihin: - Laskimet ovat nyt sallittu sähköisissä tenteissä tentaattorin luvalla. o Tentaattorin tulee kirjoittaa tieto Exam-järjestelmässä opiskelijalle tenttivarauksen aikana näkyvään ohjeeseen, jotta se näkyy myös valvontaa tekeville ylläpitäjille. o Huomaathan, että jos annat opiskelijalle luvan viedä oman laskimen tenttitilaan, emme pysty varmistamaan, että sen sisältö on tyhjä. - Paperitentit suositellaan varaamaan mahdollisuuksien mukaan maanantaille. o Kyseessä on kuitenkin vain suositus valvontateknisistä syistä ja opiskelija pystyy varaamaan tenttiajan myös toiselle päivälle. o Muista kirjoittaa myös paperille vastattavasta tentistä tieto tenttivarauksen aikana opiskelijalle näkyvään ohjeistukseen (ml. tentaattorin nimi ja sisäinen postiosoite), jotta opiskelija muistaa varata kirjoitusvälineet mukaansa ja tenttivalvoja tietää, että paperille vastaaminen on sallittua. o Myös paperisissa tenteissä tenttikysymykset ovat sähköisessä tenttijärjestelmässä, eikä tentaattori voi viedä niitä kuoressa tenttitilaan.
