renewal needs of local infra

Hello biologists of our unit, Last Friday, in our unit meeting, we shortly discussed about the possibility to modernize our local infrastructure, particularly the DNA lab, provided the Profi 6 application is successful. We are going to budget some money for this purpose in our proposal. It has already been suggested that we should buy a fragment analyzer. It also has been suggested that our ABI sequencer should be updated and that some more climate chambers should be machined. I am now asking for more proposals. What equipment would be critical to keep our labs fully functional? If you like to propose something, please also justify this need by telling what this equipment does, how many research groups will use it, and how expensive it is. Note that this is a rare possibility to renew our labs. Also note that this does not concern small devices such as pipettes, and also not extremely expensive, such as some NGS platforms (Illumina etc.). Best wishes, Marko

Hei, ilmoittakaa minulle pikaisesti mitä tehdään kurssienne 3 h pituisille mikroluokkakerroille lukuvuonna 2020-2021. Lyhennetäänkö 2 h mittaisiksi vai jatketaanko aikaa 4 h mittaisiksi? Lukujärjestysohjeiden mukaan ei enää voi olla 3 h harjoituksia. Perusteluna ilmoittavat mikroluokkien kovan käyttöasteen. Mikroluokkaopetus on aloitettava aina parillisilta tunneilta. terv. Minna

Vanamo Society grants for e.g. Master's theses , dl. 29.2. OBS! application should be in Finnish and you have to be a member of Vanamo (ask your supervisor for help!) Suomen Biologian Seura Vanamo ry jakaa vuosittain apurahoja jäsenilleen; apurahanhakukausi on helmikuu. Vuonna 2020 yksittäisen apurahan enimmäismäärä on 1 500 euroa. Apurahoja annetaan lähinnä opinnäytetöihin (ennen muuta pro gradu -tutkimusten toteuttamiseen), tieteellisiin kokouksiin osallistumiseen ja muihin yhdistyksen tavoitteita edistäviin tarkoituksiin. Apuraha voidaan myöntää vain seuran jäsenelle. Apurahahakemuksen tulee olla henkilökohtainen, hakijaa kohden saa olla vain yksi hakemus, ja hakemuksen pitää olla liitteineen suomen kieltä. Hakemus laaditaan täyttämällä verkkolomake, joka aukeaa yllä olevasta linkistä. Hakemukseen pitää merkitä mm. kahden suosittelijan nimet, puhelinnumerot ja sähköpostiosoitteet, ja sen liitteinä tulee olla työsuunnitelma (enintään kaksi sivua), kustannusarvio ja ansioluettelo. Puutteellisia hakemuksia ei käsitellä. Myönnetystä apurahasta ilmoitetaan sähköpostitse. Apurahan saajat julkistetaan Vanamon vuosikokouksessa 2020. Apurahan saajan toivotaan saapuvan paikalle. Apurahan saajan on annettava kirjallinen selvitys apurahan käytöstä ja työn edistymisestä vuoden kuluessa apurahan saamisesta sekä kirjoitettava työstä lyhyehkö vapaamuotoinen tiedonanto julkaistavaksi joko tietoverkossa tai Luonnon Tutkijassa.

Dear colleagues, don't forget today's seminar, 12:15, room AT122 with Dr. Andrew MacDougall, Guelph University, Canada, on: "Using fundamental ecological principles to redesign the global food system for greater environmental sustainability" Short summary: Feeding a growing world population, while minimizing negative environmental impacts, is a global challenge. Global food productivity has risen 123% since 1970, with food production now covering 1/3 of the earth's terrestrial surface. At the same time, farm intensification is associated with widespread environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and polluted drinking water, with costs estimated in the billions annually. Given that global food demand is projected to be at least 50% greater by 2050, it is critical that agricultural systems increase production in ways that are more environmentally sustainable. This talk focuses on a key source of environmental impact with farming - input inefficiency - and examines how basic principles of consumer-resource dynamics, stoichiometric co-limitation, plant-resource feedbacks, and other core ecological principles can readily apply, with surprising relevancy, to redesigning farm management to increase efficiency that, in turn, help mitigate factors such as pest outbreaks and loss of GHG and nutrients. Dear biologists, Maybe you follow the university news better than me, but I fear that many of you did not notice this: https://patio.oulu.fi/fi/uutiset/kustantajien-open-access-etuja English: https://patio.oulu.fi/en/news/discounts-open-access-fees In short, Oulu university has done an agreement with several major publishers (Elsevier, Springer, now also Wiley) about the discounts for open access publishing. emergency plan

Hello again, my dear fellows, People working in our unit are changing all the time. I think it is therefore time to inform new people, and remind old ones, about the unit's emergency plan. I happen to be some sort of responsible person of that in our unit, and I write to you to "wash my own hands" if something happens. If you die because you don't know what to do in case of emergency, I don't want to go to the jail because of that! But I am sincerely also caring of you too. Most importantly, if you hear an alarm (you must be deaf if you don't realize it is an alarm), you MUST leave the unit IMMEDIATELY. The place to gather is the parking area in front of the gate J. There is an emergency plan on the table in the mid-way-hall in our unit, the second floor (=first floor for Americans). It is your responsibility to familiarize with this plan. If you do not do so and you die, it is your own fault, not mine. Should you have anything to ask on this matter, please feel free to turn to me. Enjoy the week. Best wishes, Marko
