For more information, please contact the Hub's leaders, Heikki Helanterä and Mathilde van den Berg. *** Dear community members of Biodiverse Anthropocenes, Research Hub ANT3 (Innovating Approaches and Methodologies) warmly welcomes you to its first event of the Where the Magic Happens-kind: a lab tour of the Archaeology bone lab where Heli Maijanen and Mathilde van den Berg will provide demonstrations and insights into methodologies and scientific tools involving human and animal osteology. Heli will discuss topics and give demonstrations on general biological profile, pathology, and trauma (focused on humans), and Mathilde will talk about and demonstrate on bone density, teeth, and general osteological measurements (focused on animals). After the tour we would like to invite everybody to join us for coffee/tea to share and discuss how one sees the (new) methodologies we have encountered during the tour overlapping or being useful in one's own field of study or discipline in general (and discussing new approaches). Support available for Horizon Europe coordinators

Support available for Horizon Europe coordinators Are you planning to coordinate a Horizon Europe proposal for the upcoming calls in March/April 2022? Do you need help? Research and project services are offering enhanced support for researchers, who are coordinating a Research and Innovation Action (RIA) proposal for the upcoming March and April Horizon Europe calls (Clusters 1-6). The support consists of a wide variety of support services ranging from budgeting to data management including trainings, tools and actual hands-on proposal writing support. There is also a possibility to get external services for proposal review and graphic design services for infographics etc. All researchers planning to submit a proposal for the Horizon Europe RIA calls in March/ April 2022 as coordinators can express their interest to be included in the support process by answering a short webropol questionnaire<https://link.webropolsurveys.com/S/9BDCC0163E597CE3> by 30.11.2021. All information provided will be kept confidential. The applicants who are selected for the support process commit themselves to take part in the support process for the proposal preparation and submit their final proposal to a call in 2022. Selected applicants will be invited to a kick-off meeting to go through the support process and schedule in December. Selection will be made based on the availability of services and the readiness level of the proposal preparation. Dear colleagues, Biology Thursday seminar continues on 18th Nov at 12:15 (online, link below) with Prof. Helena Freitas from the Centre for Functional Ecology, Univ. of Coimbra, Portugal, giving an overview on their Centre and their national and international projects: The Centre for Functional Ecology – Science for People & the Planet (CFE) is a research unit hosted by the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Coimbra, in Portugal. It brings together researchers with multidisciplinary interests in ecology related subjects, seeking to produce knowledge on global ecology and on ecosystem functioning, from microorganisms, plants, and fauna biodiversity to the ecological complexity of their interactions at the community, ecosystem, and evolutionary level. Also, there is a strong commitment to knowledge transfer to the public and to the productive sector, both locally and nationally, with particular emphasis on the sustainability of the territories and its communities. Prof. Freitas is the coordinator of the Centre, and holds the UNESCO Chair in Biodiversity and Conservation for Sustainable Development at Univ. Coimbra. She has been involved in numerous large conservation programs and consortia, and held various positions of trust in international conservation and ecology organizations – this will certainly be a talk from the very center of where biologists apply their knowledge into crucial topics! Tiloissamme ja etenkin laboratorioissamme on ollut mahdollisuus altistua koronavirukselle 3-5.11. Jos olette olleet laboratorioissa kyseisenä aikana, niin noudattakaa Terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin laitoksen ohjeistusta sivulla: https://thl.fi/fi/web/infektiotaudit-ja-rokotukset/taudit-ja-torjunta/taudi…. Tiloissa noihin aikaan oleskelleiden oireita saaneiden sekä koronavilkun kautta varoituksen saaneiden pitäisi siis hakeutua testeihin ohjeistuksen mukaisesti. Tämä koskee myös täysin rokotettuja henkilöitä. There has been a possibility to be exposed to the coronavirus in our facilities, and especially our laboratories on 3-5 November. If you have been in the laboratories during that time follow the instructions of the National Institute for Health and Welfare on the net page: https://thl.fi/fi/web/infektiotaudit-ja-rokotukset/taudit-ja-torjunta/taudi…. Dear colleagues, please remember to join us for today's Biology Thursday seminar (11th Nov. 12:15, zoom link below) will be given by Dr. Noémie Pichon, University of Oulu, on: "Warmer climate, nutrients and grazing mediate the effects of dispersal limitation on plant community diversity and productivity" Dispersal limitation can lead to lower plant species richness and productivity than the potential maximum of natural communities. However, we know little about its long-term effects and how its importance might depend on global changes and trophic interactions. In a tundra ecosystem, we tested the effects of one-time seed addition on species richness and community biomass after 10 years, and how these effects depended on experimental warming, fertilisation, and herbivore exclusion. Species richness was higher in seeded plots compared to controls, irrespective of the experimental manipulations. Seed addition increased community biomass in ambient conditions (grazed plots without warming and fertilisation), and in communities simultaneously warmed and fertilised. In addition, herbivore exclusion drove a shift in seeded species composition from tundra to lowland species dominance. These results highlight that the importance of dispersal limitation for community assembly processes can be altered by global changes and herbivory, with consequences for ecosystem functioning. Vinkkiä opiskelujen ohjaukseen? Apua on hyvä saada kaikista kanavista. Siksi olenkin teihin yhteydessä. Moni opiskelija on tuskaillut viimeisten vuosien ajan yksinäisyyden kanssa. Sitä syystä OYY aloitti OKM:n rahoittaman hyvinvointihankkeen, jonka tavoitteena on pienentää kynnystä löytää itselleen mielekästä ajanvietettä. Lisätietoa hankkeesta viestin alaosassa. Jos ja kun te teette ohjausta opiskelijalle, olisi hienoa jos voisitte kertoa OYY:n hyvinvointihankkeesta eteenpäin. Kun opiskelija voi hyvin vapaa-ajalla ja löytää itselleen mielekästä tekemistä ja ystäviä, sujuvat myös opinnot paremmin. Viestin alaosasta myös löydätte hankkeen mainosmateriaalia. Oulun yliopiston ylioppilaskunnan OYY:n hyvinvointihanke on ollut aktiivinen viime keväästä asti, ja kuluvana syksynä toiminta on käynnistynyt yhä aktiivisemmaksi. Hyvinvointituutorointi on kaikille Oulun Yliopiston opiskelijoille avointa vertaisohjausta, jossa opiskelijat ohjaavat ja auttavat toisiaan. Opiskelijoille on tarjolla liikuntaa, tietojen ja taitojen opettelua ja kulttuuria. Järjestettävät aktiviteetit riippuvat opiskelijoiden mielenkiinnosta. Kulttuurituutoroinnissa opiskelijat voivat vierailla esimerkiksi museoissa, konserteissa tai teattereissa. Taito- ja tietotuutoroinnissa opiskelijat kohtaavat toisensa esimerkiksi koodaamisen, musiikin, opiskelutaitojen tai taiteiden merkeissä. Liikuntatuutoroinnissa voi kokeilla uusia lajeja ja liikuntamuotoja Oulun korkeakoululiikunnan, OKKL:n tarjonnasta ja sen ulkopuolelta. Palveluihin on saatu entistä edullisemmat hinnat, erityiset aukioloajat ja esimerkiksi opastuksia kulissien taakse. OYY myös auttaa eri harrastuksien aloittamisessa. Hankkeessa on jo saatu merkittäviä alennuksia ja yhteistyösopimuksia eri tahojen kanssa ja uusia luodaan tarpeiden mukaan.
