Hello all researchers, This is a reminder of a workshop that has been advertised in Patio<https://patio.oulu.fi/fi/node/5492>. Registration is required, see below. Publishing and sharing metadata of research data is required by many funders and publishers, and it is essential part of responsible research. CSC´s Qvain is a free and user-friendly way to publish metadata and get a permanent identifier (PID) for research data. Have you got questions about how to use Qvain to describe your research data? In this workshop you will get practical tips on how to use Qvain and how you can increase the visibility and impact of your research outputs by linking outputs with each other using PID. The workshop will be Linnanmaa Pegasus Library computer classroom PK247, on Wednesday, November 23rd at 10:00-12.00 am. There will be another workshop at Kontinkangas campus in the beginning of next year, the exact time and place will be announced later. Registration form<https://tools.enspire.science/eic-pathfinder-university-of-oulu-november-20…> EIC Pathfinder Open supports bottom-up, early-stage science and technology research, laying the foundations for radically new future technologies, with a vision to have a transformative effect on our economy and society. Projects should entail cutting-edge high-risk/high-gain research which dissolves traditional boundaries between sciences and disciplines with a clear potential to create new markets and address global challenges. Enspire Science will provide an online EIC Pathfinder Open training session. The course covers the basics of this funding scheme and, more importantly, how EIC Pathfinder Open is different in comparison to other Horizon Europe grants. The course will touch on all that is unique to this funding scheme, and clearly identify the additional EIC Pathfinder Open attributes for success. Registration will be done with a registration form (see below), which every participant will be asked to fill in in order to sign up. Due to GDPR regulations, Enspire Science will not be able to send course invitations to participants who will not register through this form. InfoTV above middle staircase of unit

Hello Everybody, Some of you have noticed that we have installed a InfoTV on the second floor above the middle staircase. We thought this could be a great place to showcase abstracts, results, projects, open calls, pictures of good times in the lab or out in the field, or anything similar you'd like to show. For these I have made a folder in the following directory S:\Biologia\Yhteiset\InfoTV called "Suggestions" where you can place .jpg or .png images or .mp4 videos in resolution of 1920x1080. We can then throw these from time to time on the web-server to be presented on the InfoTV. By your consent, I might transfer over time the paper abstracts seen on the corridors of second floor to also be presented on the InfoTV. I would also gladly receive any abstracts/pictures/videos etc by email if you don't have access to the aforementioned folder or if that otherwise suits you the best! Br, Petri Sundqvist

KingFisher Demo in January

Dear all people of the unit, particularly those doing molecular lab work, We are considering buying a KingFisher sample preparation (DNA/RNA/Protein extraction) instrument Apex to the unit from infrastructure funds of the ANTS programme. See the attached brochure for details. About Apex on page 5. As a rule, with such expensive instruments, there is a demo period during which anyone can test the equipment for free. It would be desirable that anyone going to use this machine would try it during the demo period. During the demo, people from the company will assist with using the machine. The demo will take place in the week starting 9 January 2023. At this point, I would need the following information from those of you who would like to test the Apex during the demo week: 1. Join us on zoom with this link: https://oulu.zoom.us/j/62917763539?pwd=WENZRy9Bb3NlSzlyeVlVamJ4RHR5Zz09 Sofía Campana from Buenos Aires University will present her research on: Plant biomass dynamics in grasslands devoted to livestock production in the context of increased nutrient loads Changes in livestock loads and eutrophication associated with human activities are modifying the functioning and dynamics of plant communities. The aim of this study was to understand the interactive effects of livestock grazing and chronic nutrient addition on the functioning (biomass accumulation and temporal stability) of grassland plant communities and the mechanisms involved in their responses. We carried out a factorial experiment of livestock exclusion and nutrient addition (N, P, and K; n = 6 blocks) during five years in a temperate grassland devoted to cattle production (Flooding Pampa, Argentina). Grazing and nutrient addition synergistically controlled grassland above-ground plant biomass as grazing reduced biomass by 52%, but when combined with fertilization, this reduction was 70%. Although fertilization increased aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) and leaf nutrient concentration, it also intensified cattle's plant consumption, thus reducing plant biomass in the grazed grassland. ANPP stability was three times higher with livestock, regardless of fertilization, which was associated with lower plant species dominance and with higher asynchrony of grassland's species. Our results provided empirical evidence of the mechanisms that modulated plant biomass dynamics in grasslands devoted to cattle production in the context of increased nutrient loads. Before you send your travel claim to Matkat 1, please check that the claim has all the necessary attachments! About processing travel claims: * Travel claims are processed in order of arrival * If the project is coming to an end, please send a separate request for travel claim processing to matkat(a)oulu.fi * Add the passenger's name and information about the travel to which the request applies to your request * Information added to the travel claim will not be visible to the team until the claim is being processed About making travel claims: * Add only the expenses you have paid yourself on the travel claim. * If, for example, the participation fee has already been paid, the cost will not be added to the travel claim. A mention in the notes is enough. * The travel claim must have information on how the travel was made (by rental car, with a colleague (name to be mentioned), shared transportation, etc.). * If the meals mentioned in the program are at your own expense, write that in the notes.
