Researchers' Night Exhibition - submit your photos now!

Dear colleagues, There will be a biology research exhibition during the Researchers' Night on 29th September. Theme is – “Living World from Different Perspectives”. There will be 15 pictures from our researchers, that will display the study organisms from researchers’ perspective. Some of our colleagues already submitted their pictures 🙂. [cid:ffff53a1-ef70-4027-8d85-6a4850b1aa15] There is more research going on at our department, which would be really great to show off. So far, I have got mostly animal images, but there is also a lot of plant and bacterial research going on, so it would be great if we get more representatives of these fields as well, plus more animals, too! To remind you, pictures could include, and are not limited to: x-ray images, pictures of skeleton, juvenile individuals, stained plant or animal cells, bacteria, plant leaves, close-up images of insect, animal feathers, plants, images of animals from a drone, plants/forests from a drone, or anything else that would show the living world how we see and study it, which is usually different from what public might perceive. In any case, this is a great opportunity to showcase your research, contribute to science communication, and practice your skills in cramming lots of info into a short but informative text. REQUIREMENTS: 1. PICTURE * As high resolution as you can get * Square composition if possible * Your own image, or image from a colleague with permission; no screenshots 1. ENGLISH TEXT * 100 words maximum * Contains species name in English and Latin * Explains why the research is important or why the species is important = why should general public care about our research and how is it relevant to them * How the picture was taken * What do you do in the project * Species name and the relevance of the research are the crucial parts, and if nothing else fits, then the rest can be put to the website (see below). 1. FINNISH TRANSLATION * Translation of English text - so do not worry too much about 100 words limit in Finnish text when translating 1. LINK FOR QR CODE * Link to the project description - either website, blog, or your own portfolio where you explain your project in detail * The link can lead to even your "Researcher's profile", where you state in more detail what is your project about and why it is important SUBMIT (TO ME) AS SOON AS YOU CAN, THE LATEST BY THE END OF JULY. (This is because the exhibition will have another, a more active part based on the picture submission, for which I need to prepare in advance.) Best wishes, Heikki >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Postdoc and PhD researcher in evolutionary genetics and genomics A position for a post-doctoral and a PhD researcher is available in the group of Ilkka Kronholm at the department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Jyväskylä. Starting earliest on 1st of September 2023 or later in the autumn, the postdoc is for three years, and the PhD position is fully funded for four years. My group studies the properties of mutations and spontaneous epigenetic changes, parental effects, and genetic architecture of complex traits. Our research questions are focused on understanding how different intrinsic and extrinsic factors affect evolutionary adaptation. As model systems we use the filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa and fission yeast. The researchers will join an ERC-funded project that studies the properties of epistatic interactions. Epistatic interactions are known to play an important part in certain aspects of evolution, such as speciation. However, role of epistasis in adaptation has remained controversial. In this project, we will estimate the probability that a pair of new mutations will exhibit an epistatic interaction, and study the distribution of epistatic effects. To achieve these goals, we will leverage mutation accumulation experiments with microbes, genetic analysis, and genomics. If you are interested in evolutionary or quantitative genetics and using newest tools of genomics to answer fundamental questions about evolution this can be the project for you! Within the Academy of Finland research project 'Untangling the role fungal network morphology in soil carbon dynamics’ we are looking for a highly motivated doctoral researcher to pursue their doctoral studies at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. The project aims at understanding how changes in fungal functional diversity impact carbon persistence in soil. The doctoral researcher will be exposed to new methods for measuring functional diversity using image-processing algorithms from pictures of fungal mycelia at microscopic and macroscopic scale. The doctoral researcher will also learn state-of-the-art methods for measuring carbon use efficiency in soil and computing skills for data analysis and visualization. Hello Everybody, Here is the invitation for tomorrow (Tuesday 13th) regarding the Kingfisher schedule. The event will start IN THE LAB near the Kingfisher instrument in molecular labs at 10:00. It is the same place where most of our PCRs are. We will stop for lunch around 11:30 and continue after that in the EcoGen coffee room with BindIx software overview and Q&A. I will set up a laptop with bigger screen and a better microphone near the Kingfisher to overcome todays technical issues. Hi all, Next week there is a second training for using the KingFisher DNA-extraction equipment. There is space to about 5-10 people to join the demos, for example 1 person per group could be a good option. All interested can attend the lectures. This time, the plan is to try plant and microbiome kits, and thus I'm asking if you have samples for microbiome analyses, could you consider giving some for testing? Some plant samples may be added as well. Please contact Soile or Hannele (cc me) if you can provide samples. Hei, tässä huomioitavia asioita opiskelijoiden kesä- ja heinäkuun valmistumisen suhteen. Opiskelijoita on kehotettu olemaan yhteydessä ohjaajiinsa, jotka voivat arvioida töiden tarkastajia kuultuaan, että mikä tulee olemaan LuK-tutkielman ja gradun tarkastusaika. Kesäkuun valmistujat * kaikki suoritukset (kurssit, kuulustelut) tulee olla Pepin rekisterissä viimeistään pe 23.6. Tutkielmat: arviointi Laturissa ja Lumi tai Seppo hyväksynyt arvioinnin viimeistään tuona päivänä. Sihteerit kirjaavat tutkielmat Laturin hyväksymispäivämäärälle Peppiin (kirjaaminen voi tapahtua tuon 23.6. päivämäärän jälkeen). Heinäkuun valmistujat * määräpäivä kaikille suorituksille ma 24.7. yo. tyyliin. Sihteerit kirjaavat tutkielmat Peppiin elokuun alussa Laturin hyväksymispäivämäärälle. Examinariumin loma-ajasta on opiskelijoita tiedotettu näin: Exam-järjestelmä kiinni 19.6.-9.7.2023 https://ict.oulu.fi/5330/ Kesäkuun valmistujat, muistakaa suorittaa LuK-kypsyysnäyte ja kaikki Examia vaativat suoritukset ennen 19.6. päivämäärää. Samoin heinäkuun valmistujat, jos haluatte tenttiä heinäkuussa tutkintoon tulevia suorituksia (ennen 24.7. päivämäärää), sopikaa opettajanne kanssa, että hän tekee kysymykset Examiin ja ilmoittaudutte tenttiin, ennen kuin opettaja jää lomalle (varmasti kysymykset järjestelmässä odottamassa).
