Hello again everyone,
I'll start by thanking everyone for participating in the laboratory cleanup last Friday, the attendance was impressive and we got a lot of cleaning done. There are still some places that we missed so here is a list of things that people working on those premises could tidy up.
Lab spaces still needing some cleaning up to do before the 360 figures can be taken:
B167a: The farthest working tables in the molecular lab: Tables are still quite full of extra clutter and not very presentative for the 360 figures. People working in the space could try to think what is actually needed on the table and what could be placed on the cupboards.
B159, tables around the KingFisher DNA-extraction machine: People using this space, please clean the tables from extra plates and unmarked samples. Kits could be placed in the cabinets(?)
[cid:4646f115-f2d2-45a1-8b6b-449296a5360f]
B151 (freezer room) and B168 (cold room for liquid nitrogen) needs some cleaning.
B104: There is still quite a lot stuff on the tables. Please clean all the things that are not currently used away from the tables (or floors). Those things that are needed in the current ongoing work can stay of course, but the space is not meant as a storage room.
[cid:00fe32df-82cf-45e0-a55e-958dd4136ec8][cid:0c62f6e9-0ed8-4131-ab4c-52541f9cc1e8]
B160a and other spaces with draining boards still full of stuff: Please clean all the sink areas/draining boards from extra clutter.
[cid:e79e5614-7e97-4b11-a73a-109b406b47e5]
The 360 pictures from In vitro spaces and teaching lab B137 will be taken after the courses this fall have ended.
Important message from the laboratory technicians:
MARK YOUR WASTE PROPERLY !!! (See the bad examples on the following picture)
Fume hoods are not meant for storing waste!
Unknown waste is the most expensive waste type to be disposed. Even if it would be just water or ethanol, but the waste container has not been marked properly, the waste will be disposed as unknown waste. This is an important thing to remember, as we all know, our budget is quite tight (and I don't think anyone wants to lose any more of our lab spaces). Also it is not very nice for the laboratory technicians to try to figure out what is in the badly marked containers (e.g., possibly smelling toxic chemicals).
More information how to properly mark or dispose your waste can be found from the Ecology and Genetics Laboratory Guide (found from coffee room, S-drive->Biologia->Yhteiset, or molecular lab table B167a) or you can ask help from our laboratory technicians.
[cid:b35ad4d8-33a6-418b-891f-a15e5cfe1a8d]
We also want to remind that the Ecology and Genetics Laboratory Guide states that Do not eat (chewing gum counts), drink, or bring/store any food/drinks in the laboratories. Food and drink consumption increases the risk of exposure to chemicals. This is most importantly for your personal safety!
Thanks again for the participation and hopefully we get good pictures of the laboratories for the 360. We will let you know when the actual date and time when the pictures will be taken in later email, but hopefully within a week or two.
BR,
Petri Sundqvist

Hello everyone,
Its time for autumn lab cleanup! We are hoping that we could clean every lab to such condition, that we could take 360° pictures of the labs so all tabletops should be clean. We of course encourage to also go through your vboxes and freezers, but main focus is for the lab to look good in pictures.
Below is the link to vote, I will check the votes on monday and if there is enough (more than 5 winning votes), I will close the vote.

Hello everybody,
Last lab cleanup for this semester would be the pre-treatment and climate rooms during some day in the last two whole weeks of April. Here is the voting link:

Poll - Cleanup date for pre-treatment and climate rooms - Framadate<https://webapp.oulu.fi/framadate/studs.php?poll=BOcGoLjCPwPMvHeB>
Framadate is an online service for planning an appointment or make a decision quickly and easily.
webapp.oulu.fi
This doesnt cleanup affect as many people, but I would like to ask the people who have worked in these premises to vote and participate. I am hoping we can tidy up the rooms and clean some of the cabins. I noticed that the freezers in these rooms were already marked in the freezer cleanup which is nice. I will close this voting around 5th of April which is Friday next week. We could then meet in the pre-treatment lab at the time and date chosen by vote.
BR,
Petri Sundqvist

Hello everybody,
Just a reminder to vote for the freezer cleanup date in the link below if you are interested. We will urge to go through the freezers and if it has picked up a lot of ice inside (and depending on the weather forecast) we can take the samples outside or try to fit into other freezers while the permafrost melts. We have noticed some freezers have so much ice that the boxes dont open, so I think these could be dealt easily this way.
I will also try to arrange a lab cleanup for the pre-treament and climate rooms later during the spring, hopefully before the summer season.

Subject: Freezer cleanup date
Hello everybody,
As we have now welcomed the year 2024 with some crispy weather, I would like to propose we could do the freezer/fridge cleanup in our unit during February which was discussed in our lab cleanup in September. I think we could again vote with Framadate and I will choose January 31st the date with most votes.
Here is the link to vote on the date:
https://webapp.oulu.fi/framadate/studs.php?poll=sPRyb8agJpI7hbVt
The idea is to encourage everybody to go through their own freezers/fridges and renew the names and dates on the doors/lids. Remember to mark the doors/lids with SURNAME/MONTH/NAME for example (SUNDQVIST 1/2024). If the date is older than 2 years, the freezers/fridges will be evaluated by our lab people, taken to common use (which might mean keeping them in storage for future) or discarded if there is nothing valuable inside. We already had a bit of suffling and stuffing after the 2023 field season to fit all the material in the freezers, so if all goes to plan we might be able to free some more room for the next season!
Hopefully you are having a nice start for the year,
Petri Sundqvist

Subject: VS: Yearly lab cleanup date
Hello everybody,
Thank you for the good attendance for the laboratory cleanup event yesterday. Looks like we got most of the molecular labs and multipurpose lab clean. There are still three things I’d like to address:
1. The fumehoods are still stuffed with waste and other stuff that should be cleaned right after the work is finished (picture attached). If you know these belong to your group, please take action and ask for help if needed in disposal.
2. We had limited time to go through the freezers and fridges, so we will likely arrange “Christmas/NewYear cleanup” that could focus on freezers + the growrooms + pre-treatment lab/esikäsittelylabra which were not included today, but I will arrange a vote about it later on.
3. Regarding the reservation of spaces, we were able to free two spots which will be reservable from the laboratory blueprint. This is still a bit work in progress, but there will be instructions on the work spot once we can finalize them. Remember to clean after yourself when you finish the work, so next one can start right away.
Thank you again for the good spirit in the cleanup!
BR,
Petri Sundqvist

Hello Everybody,
I will close the voting for the cleanup, and we will arrange it on the Tuesday 26th at 9:00 with 15 votes. I think the event will only need around 2 hours. We can again meet at the entrance/post table of molecular labs.
I will also clarify that in the original email I stated: “...because we have to clear the cabins and shelves of long term storage items (in molecular labs) and move those to the cardboard box storage” by which we do not mean clean all the cabins of all the stuff. We encourage to clean the long term storage items to cardboard box storage, and hopefully with this move we can clean enough items to have the lowest shelves of every desk empty. This would allow us to use the reservation system more conveniently, as in:
1. You make a reservation on the map that will be at the entrance to molelabs
2. Collect the items that are not yet in the lab from the cardboard box storage
3. Bring them to the lowest shelf for the duration of the reservation
4. After you no longer need the space, empty the lowest shelf to make room for the next user

Aihe: [Biolaitos] Yearly lab cleanup date
Hello Everybody,
Here is the long promised calendar voting link for the yearly lab cleanup, which will be arranged on the last two weeks of September:
https://webapp.oulu.fi/framadate/studs.php?poll=dzJVegtsQJ23KIzT
I will close this vote in 7 days on 13th of September, which is next weeks Wednesday.
This year we will focus on Molecular Labs, Cardboard Box Storage (which is the second floor storage near microbe laboratory) and Multipurpose laboratory (where I sit nowadays).
We will be printing a blueprint of the molecular labs where every user can reserve the table space of molecular lab corridors/slots for your group a few weeks at a time. This way we can maximize the use of table space which has been running low. We are also asking for every group who works in the molecular labs to join the cleanup day, because we have to clear the cabins and shelves of long term storage items and move those to the cardboard box storage, or the more often used things to the storage next to deep freezer room. We are also hoping to transfer all the empty pipette tip boxes to cardboard box storage, since they need to be refilled in order to be valuable in the laboratory.
We also encourage everybody to go through the Cardboard Box Storage and renew the names and dates on the boxes. If the date is older than 2 years, the boxes will be evaluated by our lab people, taken to common use (which might mean keeping them in storage for future) or discarded if there is nothing valuable there. Currently there are quite many boxes labelled to year 2021 so after the turn of year 2024 they will be evaluated.
We will also be cleaning the Multipurpose laboratory. We will be placing all the unmarked stuff that is stored here also in cardboard boxes and transfer them into the cardboard box storage. The boxes will be labelled Multipurpose Lab and the labels will not be renewed in the coming years, so if you have a feeling your stuff is here, please join the laboratory cleaning day.

Petri Sundqvist

Hei,
(in English below)
terveisiä opintopalveluista!
LuTK:n opintopalvelut ovat nyt muuttaneet huoneisiin MA319 (koulutusassistentit) ja MA314.1 (koulutussuunnittelijat ja johtava koulutusasiantuntija).
Palvelumme säilyvät entisenlaisina ja parhaiten meidät edelleen tavoittaa study.science(a)oulu.fi<mailto:study.science@oulu.fi> -osoitteen kautta, koska teemme monipaikkatyötä.
Koko tiimi on yleensä toimistolla torstaisin ja koulutusassistenttien vastaanottoaika opiskelijoille on torstaisin huoneessa MA319 klo 12–13.
Opiskelijoita on tiedotettu asiasta, mutta ainakin omaopettajien on hyvä olla tietoisia tilanteesta, jotta he voivat tarvittaessa ohjeistaa opiskelijoita.
Tietoa opintopalveluiden henkilökunnan tehtävistä löytyy verkkosivulta: Tiedekunnan opintopalvelut | Oulun yliopisto<https://www.oulu.fi/fi/opiskelijalle/opiskelun-tuki-ja-yhteystiedot-opiskel…> .

Hi,
greetings from study services!
Faculty of Science Study services has now moved to rooms MA319 (education assistants) and MA314.1 (educational designers and lead specialist).
The services will remain as they were before, and the best way to reach us is still through the study.science(a)oulu.fi<mailto:study.science@oulu.fi> , because we work in multiple locations.
The whole team is usually at the office on Thursdays and reception time (education assistants) for students in general study affair is on Thursdays in room MA319 at 12-13.
Students have been informed about the matter, but it is good at least for the tutor teachers to be aware of the changes so that they can guide the students if necessary.
Information about the duties of the study services staff can be found on the website:
Faculty Study Services | University of Oulu<https://www.oulu.fi/en/for-students/supporting-your-studies-and-contact-inf…>.
See you in the hallways!

Dear colleagues,
I am very pleased to host this week's Thursday seminar, Oct 31st 12:15 on site in room MA335.
Artist Josefina Nelimarkka - THE CLOUD OF UN/KNOWING
Josefina Nelimarkka is an interdisciplinary artist working with environmental questions and multisensory experiences combining artistic and scientific perspectives. In her exhibitions, she explores atmospheric phenomena and perception in collaboration with climate scientists. Her work focuses on clouds and the symbiotic relationship between nature and technology through real-time climate data - creating multiple ways of sensing, knowing and being present. Within the subtle materiality, what expands is atmospheric consciousness.
In the seminar, Josefina Nelimarkka will present her recent exhibition The Cloud of Un/knowing at Amos Rex in Helsinki and her collaboration with our Arctic Ecology and Biochemistry research group from Ecology and Genetics Research Unit, Oulu University.

Hei,
This message concerns the patent database course that is kept in Finnish. The same course will be arranged in English in May 7-8, 2025.
Tee vaikutus rahoittajiin!
* osa 1/2: 20.11.2024 klo 12.00-16 (online)
* osa 2/2: 21.11.2024 klo 9.00-12 (online)

You are warmly welcome to attend a morning coffee TODAY from 13:15 to 15 in Tellus Backstage. The event is aimed at all Biology students and staff of the Ecology and Genetics Research Unit. You don't need to register before. I reserved two hours, so if you can’t make it from the beginning, you may join whenever you wish.
We will be working first in groups and then together to find ways to make these events more communal. Welcome to generate ideas!
Best wishes,
Lumi Viljakainen
