Alla on vielä mainosviesti, jonka olemme opiskelijoille välittäneet. 🙂 Hou hou rakkaat biologit! 🎅 Se on kuulkaas niin, että marraskuu lähestyy kovaa vauhtia, ja sitä mukaa myös pikkujoulukausi. Kiltalaisten toiveesta pidämme tänä vuonna omat pikkujoulumme hyvissä ajoin, nimittäin perjantaina 15.11. klo 18 alkaen kokoonnumme yhdessä opiskelijoiden ja henkilökunnan kanssa Teekkaritalolla! Sisäänpääsy pikkujouluihin on ilmaista, ja tarjolla on jouluisia herkkuja. Saavuthan paikalle jo klo 20 mennessä, jolloin ohjelmanumerot alkavat. Iltaan mahtuu muun muassa pientä visailua, pelailua sekä tietysti fuksiemme upea esitys! 😍 Myös sauna ja palju lämpenevät, joten muistathan ottaa pyyhkeen ja uikkarit mukaan. Dear colleagues, I am very pleased to host this week's Thursday seminar, Oct 31st 12:15 on site in room MA335. Artist Josefina Nelimarkka - THE CLOUD OF UN/KNOWING Josefina Nelimarkka is an interdisciplinary artist working with environmental questions and multisensory experiences combining artistic and scientific perspectives. In her exhibitions, she explores atmospheric phenomena and perception in collaboration with climate scientists. Her work focuses on clouds and the symbiotic relationship between nature and technology through real-time climate data - creating multiple ways of sensing, knowing and being present. Within the subtle materiality, what expands is atmospheric consciousness. Kaamos reminder and keynote introductions

Reminder of the Kaamos Symposium December 4th - 5th and keynote introductions Hi all, There are still two weeks left to register as a presenter for this year's Kaamos Symposium. You have the option to give a 20-minute talk, a 30-minute talk or a poster presentation, and you can choose to deliver your oral presentation in person or online. The symposium is an excellent opportunity for everyone, particularly Ph.D. students and postdocs, to showcase their research, listen to engaging talks, and discuss current topics in biology and environmental sciences. Registration form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdIorVw4GGBXT-j0GbqvvPjIF7-OQCY9k4… The oral presentations will take place in Tellus Backstage at the University of Oulu, Linnanmaa Campus on both the 4th and the 5th of December. When the registration is closed, we will decide on the program and inform all presenters well in advance on which day they will be presenting. If you can give your talk only on either of the days let us know by emailing KaamosSymposium(a)gmail.com<mailto:KaamosSymposium@gmail.com> so we can schedule you for the day you are free to present. The deadline for registration is the 8th of November and please submit your abstract by the 15th of November to KaamosSymposium(a)gmail.com<mailto:KaamosSymposium@gmail.com>. The poster sessions will be held only in person at the Botanical Gardens at the University of Oulu on the evening of the 5th of December in parallel with the Botanical Garden party. Posters can be printed and brought to the poster session. If you are unable to print a large poster, you can also make a collage of smaller sheets (such as A4 or A3). The deadline for poster presenter registration is the 8th of November. This year we will also have an interesting workshop given by Dr Philip Downing titled The five big steps for the perfect meta-analysis. The workshop will be held on the evening of the 4th of December. There are no prerequisites for attending the workshop so everyone is welcome to join. This year we have the honour to have four amazing keynote speakers from other Universities. They are Assistant Professor Mikkel Pedersen from the University of Copenhagen, Assistant Professor Sujeet Kumar Singh from Amity University, Dr Elisabetta Versace from Queen Mary University of London and Dr Autun Purser from Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research. Dr Mikkel Pedersen is an expert in the field of ancient DNA and is especially interested in the applicability of ancient DNA, environmentally and from an archaeological perspective. Dr Sujeet Kumar Singh is a former PhD graduate from the University of Oulu and has focused his research on the genetics and evolutionary biology of big cats and Himalayan brown bear. Dr Elisabetta Versace is focused on the evolution of the fundamental building blocks of behavior and cognition, predisposed behaviors and specialized learning mechanisms. Dr Autun Purser is a senior researcher with expertise in Ocean Floor Observation System (OFOS) imaging and spatial analysis of fauna. PhD course for people working in the Laboratory!

Hi everyone, We have made a new PhD course for everyone working in the laboratory: DP00AT84-3001 Planning and Executing a Laboratory Research Project (1 - 3 ECTS) We strongly encourage each research group to send at least one representative to the course (at least for Part1) to standardize laboratory practices in our lab facilities. The course contains two parts. You can apply for PART1 only or PART1+2 together. PART1 (1ECTS): Good Laboratory Practices, General Laboratory Safety & Pipetting The main focus in this part is the laboratory safety and good lab practises, thus this part suits for anyone working in the lab! Even if you have done pipetting before the pipetting exercise is a good chance to check how precise you are in it (or you can try harder solutions to pipet). PART 2 (2 ECTS): Practical Training in the Molecular Laboratory This part is good for anyone who needs practising in the basic molecular lab skills. In addition to DNA-extraction, PCR and agarose gel electrophoresis, you will also learn how to make solutions, do basic solution and dilution calculations, and optimize your PCR. PhD level course on Emerging Contaminants in Urban Waters: Sampling, Analysis, Data Treatment Interpretation and Environmental Protection Solutions

Dear All, We are pleased to announce that the Water Energy and Environmental Engineering research unit is organizing a PhD level course on Emerging Contaminants in Urban Waters: Sampling, Analysis, Data Treatment Interpretation and Environmental Protection Solutions (5ECTs). The course will provide an in-depth description of contaminants of emerging concern and their properties aiming at increasing the attendant's ability to understand their behaviour in the natural environment in addition to recognizing the importance of different sources. Furthermore, the course will provide concrete tools, skills, and competencies to be used in the elaboration of monitoring programs, selection of analytical methods and sampling techniques, detection data interpretation and finally on contaminant reduction technologies both active and nature-based solutions. Detailed description of the course objectives, teaching methods and schedule can be found in the document attached. The course will consist of 3 Modules with an active lecture module scheduled for the 10th to 12th of December 2024 (09:00-16:00). Specialists from different topics from Finland and abroad will provide the lectures. Focus will be placed on students attending the course in person (max 20) although the opportunity will also be given for students (max 10) to follow the course online.
