Hi everyone,
We have made a new PhD course for everyone working in the laboratory: DP00AT84-3001 Planning and Executing a Laboratory Research Project (1 - 3 ECTS)
We strongly encourage each research group to send at least one representative to the course (at least for Part1) to standardize laboratory practices in our lab facilities.
The course contains two parts. You can apply for PART1 only or PART1+2 together.
PART1 (1ECTS): Good Laboratory Practices, General Laboratory Safety & Pipetting
The main focus in this part is the laboratory safety and good lab practises, thus this part suits for anyone working in the lab! Even if you have done pipetting before the pipetting exercise is a good chance to check how precise you are in it (or you can try harder solutions to pipet).
PART 2 (2 ECTS): Practical Training in the Molecular Laboratory
This part is good for anyone who needs practising in the basic molecular lab skills. In addition to DNA-extraction, PCR and agarose gel electrophoresis, you will also learn how to make solutions, do basic solution and dilution calculations, and optimize your PCR.
NOTE: Deadline for the registration is 5.11.2024.
See course advertisement below.
Cheers,
Saija & Samuel
DP00AT84-3001 Planning and Executing a Laboratory Research Project (1 - 3 ECTS)
Boost Your Lab Skills with Essential Techniques!
A specialized course for Ph.D. students.
Strengthen your expertise in laboratory safety and techniques with our hands-on, post-graduate course!
Course Dates: November 12 – December 10
Teaching Mode: In-Person
Course Structure
The course is divided into two parts:
* Part 1: Good Laboratory Practices, General Laboratory Safety & Pipetting (1 ECTS)
Open to all Ph.D. students who plan to work in a laboratory and need training in general laboratory safety, good laboratory practices, and pipetting. In Part 1, students will learn to:
* Design their laboratory work while considering good laboratory practices and laboratory safety.
* Pipette using the direct pipetting technique.
* Explain what a good laboratory notebook should contain.
* Part 2: Practical Training in the Molecular Laboratory (2 ECTS)
Open to Ph.D. students who need hands-on experience in a molecular laboratory setting. In Part 2, students will learn to:
* Use the most common equipment in a molecular laboratory (pipette, scale, autoclave, centrifuge, PCR device, electrophoresis apparatus).
* Plan and carry out the most common tasks in a molecular laboratory (DNA isolation, PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis).
* Assess the success of their work.
* Keep a laboratory notebook of their work
Who Can Apply?
The course is primarily intended for 1st-year Ph.D. students, but master students and post-docs who lack Finnish laboratory courses/safety training are also welcome.
Participation Requirements
Part 1 can be completed independently. However, if you wish to attend Part 2, completing Part 1 is mandatory. Students will be selected based on their motivation letter.
Registration Period: October 23, 2024 - November 5, 2024
How to Register: Sign up via Peppi or Tuudo platforms.
