Dear colleagues, this weeks' Biology Thursday seminar will happen on site, room MA335, 12:15. Our speaker is Dr. Francoise Martz, from the Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE), Production system unit - Plant genetics and genomics, on "Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica): an under-utilized but also under-studied special plant" Nettle (Urtica dioica) is a perennial, fast growing multiple purpose plant with well-known properties. Considered as a weed, it is particularly rich in N, P, calcium, iron, vitamins and bioactive compounds. It has gained a lot of interest recently as it can be used as supplementary feed, food, nutraceuticals, in pharmaceutics, cosmetics, agriculture, textile or biocomposites. The main results of the project "Arctic nettle, from weed to money (ARKNOKK)" will be presented, as well as open questions regarding nettle as an potential alternative crop. Hei luonnontieteilijät! Oulun yliopisto on päivittänyt kansainvälisen saapuvan harjoittelijan ohjetta. Linjaus on tehty, jotta käytänteet ovat kaikissa tiedekunnissa samat. Jatkossa palkattomaan harjoitteluun saa tulla Oulun yliopistoon vain partnerikorkeakouluista. Harjoittelu tarkoittaa, että harjoittelijalle ei makseta palkkaa tai mitään muutakaan korvausta harjoittelun suorittamisesta (ei esim. asumiskuluja). Tällöin harjoittelija ei ole työsuhteessa yliopistoon, eikä häneltä voida vaatia työtehtävien suorittamista, vaan harjoittelu on luonteeltaan töihin tutustumista. Sopimusten ulkopuolelta (ei partneriyliopistoista) tulevien ns. freemover opiskelijoiden ottaminen yksikköön ei siten ole enää mahdollista. Harjoittelijoiden palkkaaminen yksikköön työsuhteeseen on kuitenkin mahdollista. Jos tutkimusyksikköön saapuu prosessin ulkopuolinen harjoittelija, tutkimusyksikkö vastaa täysin seurauksista. Henkilö on joko palkattava työntekijäksi tai lähetettävä kotiin. University of Oulu has updated the guidelines about Incoming international trainees. Guidelines have been established to guarantee equal policies for all Faculties. Only partner universities are allowed to send students for internships at the University of Oulu. An internship means that the intern will not be paid or receive any other compensation for completing the internship (for example living costs). The trainee is not in an employment relationship with the university, and they cannot be required to perform work tasks; rather, the internship is essentially an orientation to work. The admission of so-called freemover students coming from outside the agreements (not from partner universities) to any unit is therefore not possible. Hiring interns into the unit as employees is, however, possible. If an external intern arrives at the research unit, the research unit is fully responsible for the consequences. Dear Academy Research Fellow 2025 applicant, I will organize a proposal reading event for FSci's researchers participating in the current Academy Research Fellow application round. This event will provide you with the opportunity to read examples of successful Research Fellow applications that have previously received funding. The event will be organized as follows: * The event will be held on-site at Linnanmaa Campus, Foodoo Garden Kumina, on Friday, November 22 from 9:00 to 11:00 * The event is intended ONLY for researchers from the Faculty of Science who are participating in the Academy Research Fellow call in 2025. * Proposals will be provided as paper copies only. Participants may preselect up to three proposals for reading (30 min/proposal), as indicated in the registration form. * Participants may only use pen and paper for taking notes during the session. * Photocopying or taking photos of the applications is not allowed. Additionally, proposals must remain within the reading room and cannot be taken out. * The maximum number of participants is 15. The event takes place at Star Cinema on Tuesday, 12 November, from 2:30 to 5:15 pm, with discounted ticket prices of 10 euros for staff, 5 euros for students. The film raises an important and topical issue about the state of the environment and the importance of protecting it. At the heart of the story are young student characters that develop a fusion reactor, who not only provide a platform for identification, but also remind us that young people are an essential part of the solution to societal challenges. The film is directed by Arto Halonen, an internationally acclaimed director-producer who has tackled important social issues. The film stars an impressive cast of widely experienced and well-known actors, including Linnea Leino, Elias Westerberg, Tuomas Nilsson, Antti Reini and many others. What role do hope, and new possibilities play when fiction meets science? The panel will feature researchers from the University of Oulu's key profiling programmes: professor of evolutionary biology, genetics and ecology Heikki Helanterä from the Biodiverse Anthropocenes research programme, hydrogen researcher Filipp Temerov from the H2FUTURE research programme, professor of socio-ecological resilience Maria Ojala from the FRONT research programme and film director Arto Halonen. The film in Finnish has English subtitles. The panel discussion will be held in English.
