Dear colleagues,
this week's Biology Thursday Seminar will be 16th May, 12:15 on site in room MA335 with
Dr. Tiina Mattila from Department of Organismal Biology, Uppsala University, on "Gene flow, isolation and kinship in Stone Age Eastern Europe and Scandinavia"
The genetic structure of Stone Age western Eurasian human populations was strongly associated with major cultural changes. Before the transition to agriculture genetically differentiated hunter-gatherer groups inhabited western Eurasia. Some of these groups invented agriculture in the Fertile Crescent starting approximately 12,000 years ago. Over the next few thousand years, agriculture spread across much of Europe. Thanks to the development of ancient DNA research in recent decades, we now know that this spread was largely mediated by the migration of people. In the first part of the talk, I will refine the spatio-temporal details of this process using an ancient DNA investigation of population structure, isolation, and gene flow in central, eastern, and northern Europe before and after the spread of agriculture.
In addition to revealing broad population structure, ancient DNA within-population studies can help to identify the social factors influencing the organization of prehistoric societies. For this purpose, in the second part of the talk, I will present archaeogenomic results concerning the within-population structure of the sub-Neolithic Pitted Ware Culture (PWC) foragers from Gotland, Sweden. I will discuss the results in light of the variability and evolution of social systems in general.

Online ERC training 20.-21.5.2024
Research and Project Services, together with the ERC consultancy company Yellow Research, are organising an online training on 20-21 May on how to write a successful Horizon Europe ERC grant proposal.
This two-part webinar-form training provides a roadmap to submission, tackling stumbling blocks that you, as Principal Investigator (PI), may have when writing your ERC grant application. This training will focus on creating the right mindset for submitting a proposal, covering the ERC objectives and evaluation criteria, what the panels expect, how to strategically approach the design of the project, and how to generate a convincing argumentation that will allow the reviewers to understand the feasibility of your ambitious research project. This training will also guide participants systematically through the different parts of the proposal writing, addressing the critical elements for writing the CV part, extended synopsis and B2.
Please note that training lasts for two days:
Monday 20 May, 9:30-12:00 and
Tuesday 21 May, 9:30-12:00
The training will be recorded, and the recordings will be made available to the registered participants.

How to coordinate and write an excellent HE consortium proposal -training 23.5.2024 at 13.00-16.00 (Tellus Stage)
Research and Project Services is organizing a training on proposal writing and coordination to support researchers interested in Horizon Europe (HE) consortium projects.
This training is open to all researchers, whether you are just learning about EU projects or already participated in them. We are concentrating on Research and Innovation/ Innovation project proposals.
Setting up a proposal is a project in itself. It starts with finding a suitable call and understanding the call text. Setting up the objectives and writing the proposal is a time-consuming exercise.
In this training, we will give you guidance on how to avoid the common pitfalls, and how to write the different sections of the proposal (Excellence, Impact and Implementation). We will discuss SMART objectives, Key Performance Indicators, key impact pathways, deliverables, milestones, risks and barriers and obstacles. As coordinator, you also need to find the right partners and make sure they work together despite their different backgrounds and motivations. We will discuss the tasks of a coordinator, the most important tools, how to keep the schedule and how to divide the work in order not to become overwhelmed by the preparation.
Coffee and refreshments will be served to participants.

Dear all/Hei,
Welcome to the info session on applying research funding from the US sources on the 16th of May at 12-13. USA has a vast R&D budget and although majority of the funding goes to US, there are still many opportunities for Non-US researchers to apply funding from the Federal and private/non-profit sectors.
In the info, we will go through an overview of the US funding landscape and what to take into consideration when applying, and we'll have presentations from the University of Oulu researchers who have been granted Federal and private/non-profit funding. The info is held over Teams (link below), there is no registration and the language is English.
The info session is targeted at all University of Oulu, junior and senior, researchers interested in direct research funding from the US!
Tervetuloa infosessioon suoran tutkimusrahoituksen hakemisesta USA:sta, 16.5., 12-13! USAlla on valtava TKI-budjetti ja vaikka suurin osa rahoituksesta kohdistuu kyseiseen valtioon, myös ulkomaisilla tutkijoilla on paljon mahdollisuuksia hakea rahoitusta liittovaltion tasolla ja erilaisista yksityisistä lähteistä, kuten säätiöiltä.
Infossa käymme läpi USA:n-tutkimusrahoitusympäristön mahdollisuuksia Oulun Yliopiston tutkijoille ja mitä kannattaa ottaa huomioon rahoituksen hakemisessa. Infossa kuulemme myös kahta yliopiston tutkijaa, joilla on suoraa tutkimusrahoitusta USAsta, liittovaltiolta ja säätiöstä. Info pidetään Teamsin kautta, eikä siihen tarvitse ilmoittautua erikseen. Tapahtuman kieli on englanti.
Infon kohdeyleisöä ovat kaikki yliopiston nuoret ja varttuneemmat tutkijat, jotka ovat kiinnostuneet suoran tutkimusrahoituksen hakemisesta USA:sta!
Program/Ohjelma:
* US funding landscape and applying direct funding, Research Support Services
* Applying for Federal funding, Associate Professor Jack Soh
* Applying for foundation funding, Professor Riitta Veijola
You are warmly welcome to the info session/tervetuloa infoon!
