VL: ERC events in May: Online ERC Training and ERC Applications Reading Day

ERC events in May: Online ERC Training (19.-20.5.) and ERC Applications Reading Day (27.5.) Research and Project Services, together with the ERC consultancy company Yellow Research, are organising an online training on 19-20 May on how to write a successful Horizon Europe ERC grant proposal. We will also organise, for the second time, Successful ERC Applications Reading Day in May 27. Online training: The two-part webinar-form ERC training provides a roadmap to submission, tackling stumbling blocks that you, as Principal Investigator (PI), may have when writing your ERC grant application. This training will focus on creating the right mindset for submitting a proposal, covering the ERC objectives and evaluation criteria, what the panels expect, how to strategically approach the design of the project, and how to generate a convincing argumentation that will allow the reviewers to understand the feasibility of your ambitious research project. This training will also guide participants systematically through the different parts of the proposal writing, addressing the critical elements for writing the CV part, extended synopsis and B2. Please note that training takes place over two days: Monday 19 May, 9:30-12:00 and Tuesday 20 May, 9:30-12:00 The training will be recorded, and the recordings will be made available to the registered participants. Koulutuksessa opastetaan osallistujia myös järjestelmällisesti hakemuksen eri osien kirjoittamisessa ja käsitellään CV-osan, laajennetun yhteenvedon ja B2-osan kirjoittamisen kannalta kriittisiä tekijöitä. Dear colleagues, reminder about today's Biology Thursday seminar from the intersection of social evolution, -omics and behaviour! On Thu 23rd Jan, 12:15, on zoom (link below), Assoc. Prof Adria LeBoeuf, Dept. of Zoology, Univ. Cambridge: Socially transferred materials and metabolic division of labour Behaviours that transmit metabolised materials from one body to another allow the genome of one individual to influence the fitness of another. In social transfers of care like lactation or egg-laying, this decoupling of resource acquisition, processing, and use over time, space, and across individuals results in metabolic division of labor. Social transfers that enable metabolic division of labor have led to profound shifts in ecology and life-history evolution in that these allow typically parents to process, package and transmit goods to offspring using specifically adapted proteins that lighten metabolic loads, modulate immune responses, and even direct development. Social insects engage in a multitude of social transfers - the classics of mating and egg laying, but also many forms of trophallaxis (including social regurgitation) with still darker transfers like larval hemolymph feeding and adaptive cannibalism. I will discuss our research unraveling metabolic division of labor in ant colonies, merging transcriptomics and proteomics to detail protein fluxes across the superorganism, unpicking the evolutionary causes and consequences of metabolic division of labor on ant evolution, morphology and behaviour, and finally what this means with regard to the major evolutionary transition toward superorganismality. This perspective recontextualises centuries of research to help us understand the innovations and constraints that have occurred over social insect evolution.
