If you'd like me to review your application, please share a draft by 3 November. Research security self-assessment All applicants must include as an appendix a self-assessment of research security issues and, if necessary, a more detailed description of the risks and a risk management plan. The assessment must be prepared using the template<https://www.aka.fi/en/research-funding/apply-for-funding/how-to-apply-for-f…> provided by the funder. The commitment issued by the site of research to the application means that the university accepts the application and confirms that security risks and their management have been adequately addressed in the application. The internal process at the University of Oulu All applicants need clearance from the person who gives commitment by site or research, prior to submission of their application. For this purpose, we are collecting the research security information from you in Webropol and forward it to the relevant commitment giver. We also ask you to give a short summary (or draft abstract) of your research to help evaluate the research security issues which may arise. Submit your answers on two Webropol forms by 31 October: 1. Apply now: funding for international strategic partnership development

You can now apply for the University of Oulu International Strategic Partnership Development Funding for 2026. This funding aims to strengthen the university's global engagement, encourage and catalyse high-quality, strategic education and research collaborations with international partners. We now invite proposals that focus on building new, sustainable links with our preferred partner institutions, as listed below, in Canada, India, Japan, South Africa and South Korea. Applications with other institutions may also be considered. Maximum funding available is up to 10,000 Euros per application and must be used by 31.12.2026. Winter is coming and so is the 29th Kaamos symposium! KAAMOS 2025 Dec 3, 2025, 12:00am – Dec 5, 2025, 12:00am (GMT+03:00) Eastern European Time - Helsinki We welcome everyone to join us on 3rd and 4th of December at the Tellus Backstage, University of Oulu. This year we have a fantastic selection of keynote speakers: Richard Johnson SLU, Caroline Isaksson LU, Pekka Niittynen JYU and Simone Lang UNIS. However, one of the main reasons for Kaamos is to provide a low-threshold event for early-stage academics to talk about their research. New course this autumn

Dear All, This autumn we will offer a new course "Introduction to container-based scientific tools in supercomputing” in collaboration with Koç University, Turkey, as part of the University Alliance program (UNIC). The course will take place in-person here in Oulu November 17-21 2025. Registration is now open in Peppi (NA00BC17-3001). Below is a short description of the course. I hope many of you can join. Best, Juan Many scientific applications depend on specific libraries and software packages that must be managed in a controlled setup. Containers make this process easier by packaging an application with all its dependencies into a single, isolated environment. This allows the application to run consistently across different systems, whether on a personal laptop, a private data center, or high-performance computing (HPC) environments. In this course, you will learn: - The essential concepts of HPC containers - The basics of building and running containers - Deploying containerized applications in HPC systems (CSC).

This event will bring together researchers and innovators across multiple time zones from Canada, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, and New Zealand to forge new collaborations and share expertise in polar climate research. This event focuses on a specific set of Horizon Europe calls (Cluster 5, Destination 1) from the draft 2026-2027 Work Programme. These topics address critical knowledge gaps and aim to advance our understanding of a changing climate, with a particular focus on the high-latitude regions and their global impacts. Other European researchers and innovators with relevant expertise are also welcome to attend and pitch. Event Format The virtual matchmaking event will begin with an overview from each of the host nations, highlighting their key research priorities and capacities. The session will then break into dedicated virtual rooms for each call. This will be your opportunity to provide your three-minute pitch to potential partners. Participants can present their projects and organization. Your pitch should clearly articulate your expertise and how you can contribute to a consortium for a specific call. This call focuses on improving climate data for a wide range of users, stakeholders and regions to support climate change assessments and climate monitoring. It supports the development, maintenance and analysis of key climate data sets and analysis tools. * HORIZON-CL5-2026-07-D1-02: Advancing European climate risk assessments This topic is about developing more sophisticated tools to assess and manage climate risks. By combining our diverse perspectives and data from different regions, we can build a more comprehensive picture of vulnerabilities and develop better adaptation strategies. * HORIZON-CL5-2026-07-D1-03: Economics of climate change and cost of inaction This call focuses on the economic dimensions of climate change. It's an essential area for collaboration, allowing us to quantify the financial benefits of climate action versus the mounting costs of delay. Your insights will be invaluable in building a robust economic case for global climate policy. * HORIZON-CL5-2026-07-D1-06: Closing knowledge gaps on Earth system science in support of global and regional assessments and climate policy This broad call is the perfect fit for a wide range of expertise. It invites us to fill the missing pieces in our understanding of the Earth's climate system, from ocean dynamics to atmospheric science. The goal is to provide the critical scientific foundation needed to inform and strengthen international climate policies, such as those of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
