Cheers, Gerrit 🙂 _______________________ Dear all, What does it mean to become a better modeller? Join us on 9 December for a day of reflection and dialogue on modelling practices, values, and assumptions. We will begin at 9:00 in Stage, Tellus with a keynote by M.V. Eitzel on community-based modelling for socio-environmental sustainability — an inspiring talk open to everyone. No registration is required to attend the keynote. Please see below for the short description of her talk and for her bio. Following the keynote, a hands-on workshop (11:00–16:30, room KK238) invites modellers working with computational models to take part in an exercise to open up the black box of models. The workshop will be facilitated by me and the keynote speaker. Together, we will surface tacit values, examine gaps between ideals and practices, and discuss how to navigate constraints. Lunch will be provided. Participation in the workshop is limited, so please send an email to selen.eren(a)oulu.fi<mailto:selen.eren@oulu.fi> to register, including your affiliation, dietary requirements and a one-sentence description of the model you work with/on by Friday, 21 November. Warm regards, Selen Eren Short description of the keynote: How can models and data science serve community needs and the larger public good? Often this requires training and experience outside typical science curricula and research team norms. In my keynote, I will share some of the insights I've gleaned from working on interdisciplinary teams of biophysical and social science researchers, and how these skills relate to being able to work with communities so that models bring benefit rather than harm. Through interdisciplinary synthesis and discussion, thoughtful self-evaluation, and group intention-setting and implementation of best practices, we can move our projects towards doing the work in the world that we intend it to do. Speaker bio: MV Eitzel is a community-based modeler working at the University of California, Berkeley and University of California, Davis. MV's research sits at the intersection of data science, Science and Technology Studies, and community-based participatory work -- focusing on finding the right technologies for community questions and understanding how we can do work that supports the long-term flourishing of people and their environments. Facilitator bio: Selen Eren is an environmental social scientist, working as a post-doc in the Cultural Anthropology unit at the University of Oulu. Her research focuses on fostering environmental scientific knowledge production that is both responsible and relevant to the immediate environments and communities within which it takes place. The conference is now accepting proposals from scholars, independent researchers, students, civil society actors, practitioners, and policymakers. Submissions may include individual papers, thematic panels, workshops, round table discussions, book talks, or special issue presentations. About the Conference Within the context of post-industrial urban transformations, the conference examines how institutions strive to respond to the challenges of growing socio-spatial inequalities, uneven access to health and social care, and the pressures of governing increasingly diverse and superdiverse urban populations, including how everyday encounters with institutions in clinics, schools, welfare offices, neighbourhood councils, streets, platforms, and housing systems shape well-being and belonging. From local administrations and public health providers to universities, schools, and civil society organizations, institutions play a critical role in shaping how cities address disparities between neighbourhoods, ensure democratic participation in local decision-making, and foster collective well-being. By focusing on the interplay between institutions and urban change, the conference seeks to explore how institutions can adapt to shifting urban realities and manage tensions between inclusion and exclusion. It aims to foster dialogue on how different actors and governance levels respond to these challenges, and how collaborative and innovative approaches can support urban futures that promote equity and well-being. The event will bring together scholars, policymakers, and practitioners to advance transdisciplinary approaches, co-creative methodologies, and policy-relevant research. We invite multidisciplinary contributions from across, but not limited to, the social sciences, law, health, education, and urban studies. Thematic Streams Stream 1: Justice, Security, and Institutional Dynamics: Resilience and Legitimacy This stream explores how institutions respond to crises, uphold justice, and adapt in times of democratic volatility, digital transformation, and growing societal complexity. It is concerned with institutional and digital resilience, inclusivity, and legitimacy in the face of multiple crises including conflicts, economic inequality, and threats to democracy. Stream 2: Health and Wellbeing in Post-Industrial Cities: Institutions, Inequalities and Transformations This stream explores how health and well-being are shaped by institutional transformation, social inequalities, and urban change. It focuses on inclusive and adaptive health policies, infrastructure, and governance in diverse and superdiverse urban contexts. Transversal Theme: Superdiversity as a Lens for Navigating Inclusion and Belonging in Post-Industrial Cities Superdiversity serves as a transversal lens across all thematic streams, emphasizing the multiplicity of differences—ethnic, linguistic, legal, socio-economic, gendered, and cognitive—that shape contemporary urban life. This theme invites critical engagement with how institutions, policies, and communities respond to complexity and foster inclusive environments in education, health, justice, and urban governance. We encourage contributions that trace how everyday administrative and digital practices (registration, triage, eligibility, platform access) produce or mitigate exclusion for differently positioned residents.
