Hello again everyone, I'll start by thanking everyone for participating in the laboratory cleanup last Friday, the attendance was impressive and we got a lot of cleaning done. There are still some places that we missed so here is a list of things that people working on those premises could tidy up. Lab spaces still needing some cleaning up to do before the 360 figures can be taken: B167a: The farthest working tables in the molecular lab: Tables are still quite full of extra clutter and not very presentative for the 360 figures. People working in the space could try to think what is actually needed on the table and what could be placed on the cupboards. B159, tables around the KingFisher DNA-extraction machine: People using this space, please clean the tables from extra plates and unmarked samples. Kits could be placed in the cabinets(?) [cid:4646f115-f2d2-45a1-8b6b-449296a5360f] B151 (freezer room) and B168 (cold room for liquid nitrogen) needs some cleaning. B104: There is still quite a lot stuff on the tables. Please clean all the things that are not currently used away from the tables (or floors). Those things that are needed in the current ongoing work can stay of course, but the space is not meant as a storage room. [cid:e79e5614-7e97-4b11-a73a-109b406b47e5] The 360 pictures from In vitro spaces and teaching lab B137 will be taken after the courses this fall have ended. Important message from the laboratory technicians: MARK YOUR WASTE PROPERLY !!! (See the bad examples on the following picture) Fume hoods are not meant for storing waste! Unknown waste is the most expensive waste type to be disposed. Even if it would be just water or ethanol, but the waste container has not been marked properly, the waste will be disposed as unknown waste. This is an important thing to remember, as we all know, our budget is quite tight (and I don't think anyone wants to lose any more of our lab spaces). Also it is not very nice for the laboratory technicians to try to figure out what is in the badly marked containers (e.g., possibly smelling toxic chemicals). More information how to properly mark or dispose your waste can be found from the Ecology and Genetics Laboratory Guide (found from coffee room, S-drive->Biologia->Yhteiset, or molecular lab table B167a) or you can ask help from our laboratory technicians. [cid:b35ad4d8-33a6-418b-891f-a15e5cfe1a8d] We also want to remind that the Ecology and Genetics Laboratory Guide states that Do not eat (chewing gum counts), drink, or bring/store any food/drinks in the laboratories. Food and drink consumption increases the risk of exposure to chemicals. This is most importantly for your personal safety! Thanks again for the participation and hopefully we get good pictures of the laboratories for the 360. We will let you know when the actual date and time when the pictures will be taken in later email, but hopefully within a week or two. I think we could again vote with Framadate and I will choose January 31st the date with most votes. If the date is older than 2 years, the freezers/fridges will be evaluated by our lab people, taken to common use (which might mean keeping them in storage for future) or discarded if there is nothing valuable inside. We already had a bit of suffling and stuffing after the 2023 field season to fit all the material in the freezers, so if all goes to plan we might be able to free some more room for the next season! Looks like we got most of the molecular labs and multipurpose lab clean. There are still three things I’d like to address: 1. The fumehoods are still stuffed with waste and other stuff that should be cleaned right after the work is finished (picture attached). If you know these belong to your group, please take action and ask for help if needed in disposal. 2. We had limited time to go through the freezers and fridges, so we will likely arrange “Christmas/NewYear cleanup” that could focus on freezers + the growrooms + pre-treatment lab/esikäsittelylabra which were not included today, but I will arrange a vote about it later on. 3. Regarding the reservation of spaces, we were able to free two spots which will be reservable from the laboratory blueprint. This is still a bit work in progress, but there will be instructions on the work spot once we can finalize them. This year we will focus on Molecular Labs, Cardboard Box Storage (which is the second floor storage near microbe laboratory) and Multipurpose laboratory (where I sit nowadays). We will be printing a blueprint of the molecular labs where every user can reserve the table space of molecular lab corridors/slots for your group a few weeks at a time. This way we can maximize the use of table space which has been running low. We are also asking for every group who works in the molecular labs to join the cleanup day, because we have to clear the cabins and shelves of long term storage items and move those to the cardboard box storage, or the more often used things to the storage next to deep freezer room. We are also hoping to transfer all the empty pipette tip boxes to cardboard box storage, since they need to be refilled in order to be valuable in the laboratory. We also encourage everybody to go through the Cardboard Box Storage and renew the names and dates on the boxes. If the date is older than 2 years, the boxes will be evaluated by our lab people, taken to common use (which might mean keeping them in storage for future) or discarded if there is nothing valuable there. Currently there are quite many boxes labelled to year 2021 so after the turn of year 2024 they will be evaluated. We will also be cleaning the Multipurpose laboratory. We will be placing all the unmarked stuff that is stored here also in cardboard boxes and transfer them into the cardboard box storage. The boxes will be labelled Multipurpose Lab and the labels will not be renewed in the coming years, so if you have a feeling your stuff is here, please join the laboratory cleaning day. The expedition and associated course is organised by UiT - The Arctic University of Norway and under the Arctic Six alliance. The University of Oulu is able to offer one free place to a Masters or PhD student to join, gaining 10 ECTS with the course “Arctic Future Pathfinders – A journey through the Northwest Passage”. The course is designed to be project-based and with an overarching focus on developing inter- and transdisciplinary skills, critical futures-thinking competences, personal reflections, and collaborative practice. Indigenous and traditional knowledge and perspectives, conventional science, and societal challenges at large are integrated in the course content. Students and doctoral candidates must be socially engaged, physical and mentally robust, curious, and above all, wish to be part of the solution to major societal challenges related to climate change and sustainable use of the ocean (in a broad sense). In English below Muistutuksena kaikille Linkityn käyttäjille: Kokoaikainen työaika on 7 h 15 min päivässä, ruokatauon kanssa kokonaisajaksi tulee 7h 45 min. Ruokatunti on omaa aikaa eikä työaikaa. Työ alkaa klo 6.00-9.30 välillä ja päättyy klo 14.15-19.30 välillä. Työaika alkaa, kun saavut työpaikalle ja loppuu, kun lähdet työpaikalta, eli kirjaukset sisään ja ulos tehdään työpaikalla. Jos olet etätöissä (ja siitä on sovittu lähiesimiehesi kanssa), työaika alkaa tietenkin silloin, kun aloitat työpäivän ja loppuu, kun lopetat työskentelyn. Jos hoidat omia asioitasi kesken työpäivän, tulee sinun merkitä tämä myös Linkityyn. Esimerkkinä: Jos kirjaat itsesi töihin jo kotona lähtiessäsi töihin tai jätät tietoisesti kirjaamatta kesken päivää tehdyn pankkiasiointikäynnin on kyse työaikakirjanpidon väärinkäytöstä. Enimmäiskertymät ja -miinukset tuntisaldoissa saavat olla +40/-10 tuntia. Muista myös hakea lomat ajoissa Mepcossa, lomahakemukset tulee tehdä hyvissä ajoin etukäteen eikä edellisenä päivänä! The Act on Public Procurement and Concession Contracts requires the contracting entity to tender all similar procurements whose value exceeds 60,000 euros during the contract period. For flights, hotels, train and ferry trips, and travel agency services, the University of Oulu has contracted partners in accordance with the procurement law, from whom services must be procured. Purchases from other operators are against the procurement law and are therefore not acceptable costs in projects, for example.Travel tickets for business trips must be ordered through the university's contracted travel agency. The university's travel agency services are provided by Amex GBT. * When you book your trips from travel agency, you are covered by the travel agency's emergency management. The travel agency contacts the traveler in emergency situations and finds out the traveler's situation and possibilities for alternative travel arrangements. * Travel agency offers support and assistance in problem situations, such as cancellations or changes. * Travel agency's customer service is available 24/7. * When booking from the travel agency, you do not need to use your own credit card. * Booking from the travel agency is faster than searching for flights and accommodations on different sites. * When booking from the travel agency, you get access to competitive prices. * Booking from the travel agency does not violate the procurement law. If suitable flights/hotels cannot be found from the travel agency, travel can be booked through other means with the permission of the unit director. The travel expense report must include a reason why the contracted travel agency was not used. If the reason is the price, the invoice must include a price comparison of exactly the same trips obtained from elsewhere/from the travel agency. Without the permission of the unit director and a reason/comparison on the travel expense report, expenses will not be reimbursed. >From 1.3.2025, advances will no longer be paid for flights and hotel reservations. It's not allowed to use unit credit cards (s.c. conference cards) for travel-related expenses except participation fees. Matkalaskulla on oltava perustelu miksi ei ole käytetty sopimusmatkatoimistoa. Mikäli syynä on hinta, tulee laskulla olla hintavertailu täsmälleen vastaavista matkoista muualta/matkatoimistosta hankittuna. Ilman tulosyksikön johtajan lupaa ja matkalaskulla olevia perustelua/hintavertailuja kuluja ei korvata. Ennakkoa ei 1.3.2025 alkaen makseta lentoihin ja hotellivarauksiin. Yksiköiden maksuvastuulla olevilla luottokorteilla (ns. konferenssikorteilla) ei saa maksaa muita matkustamiseen liittyviä kustannuksia kuin osallistumismaksut. Welcome to a free bus ride to Sanginjoki Forest on March 1 and on March 8.3. Lots of winter activities for kids also. Registration for the bus ride mandatory (see more in English below) Tervetuloa Loppulan luontotalolle hiihtolomaviikolla! Järjestämme lomaviikolla koko perheen ulkoilutapahtuman lauantaina 1.3. Tapahtumapäivänä maksuton bussikuljetus Rajakylästä kaupungin kautta Loppulaan. Mukana hiihtoloman lauantaitapahtumien järjestämisessä SLL Oulun, Loppulan ystävien ja Naturestin lisäksi Karva-Kaverit, Luonto-Liiton Pohjois-Suomen piiri, Metsähallituksen luontopalvelut ja Oulun Latu. Aktiviteetit * Kahvila palvelee ja kirppis on auki hiihtolomalla joka päivä klo 11-16/ * Talvipäivän viettäjien iloksi Loppulassa on liukumäki, luontopolku lähimetsässä, pellolla ladut lapsille ja lapsenmielisille (kelivaraus*) ja pihalla nuotiot.
