Changes to the 2026 and 2027 Work Programmes (https://erc.europa.eu/news-events/news/changes-2026-and-2027-work-programmes ) ERC Work Programme 2026 The new ERC 2026 work programme is expected to be published on the 9.7. when the ERC Starting Grant call opens. As it's during our summer holiday period, please find it online on the ERC website: https://erc.europa.eu/homepage The overall structure of the application form for the ERC calls will remain the same; however, applicants will be asked to structure their project proposal as follows: * Part I of the Scientific Proposal (formerly, the Extended Synopsis) should describe the overall idea of the proposed research project, including the current state of knowledge and how the research will contribute to the field, the scientific questions the project will attempt to answer, the objectives of the project, and the overall approach or research strategy to achieve those objectives. As in the past, the length of this section will be limited to five pages. * Part II of the Scientific Proposal should describe the implementation in detail: the research methodology, work plan, risk assessment and mitigating measures, justification for the requested budget and resources, and any further necessary background not included in Part I. The length of this section, will now be limited to seven pages for Starting, Consolidator, and Advanced Grant applications and ten pages for Synergy Grant applications. This page limit does not apply to the justification of the requested budget and resources. For Synergy Grant applications, this section should also explain the collaborative arrangements enabling the Synergy Grant group to carry out the project. New Funding Instrument: The ERC Scientific Council is currently working on a new instrument to offer ambitious researchers substantial funding for up to seven years, as part of the Choose Europe for Science<https://erc.europa.eu/news-events/news/choose-europe-science-erc-welcomes-n…> initiative announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. More details about the modalities will follow in due course. The new funding instrument will be included in an amended version of the ERC Work Programme 2026 that is expected to be adopted by the end of 2025. ERC Work Programme 2027 In recognition of the variety and diversity of present-day academic career trajectories, the Scientific Council has decided to widen the eligibility period for both its Starting and Consolidator Grant schemes. From 2027 on, researchers will be eligible to apply for a Starting Grant immediately after successfully defending their PhD, and at any time within the following ten-year period (DL of the call 2027 in August 2026) . Consolidator Grant applicants will be eligible to apply between five and fifteen years after defending their PhD ( DL of the call 2027 in February 2027). All current policies for the extension of the eligibility periods will remain in force. However, researchers will be awarded no more than one Starting Grant and one Consolidator Grant during their career. ERC Proposal Reading Days (PRDs): 20 August in Tampere, 28 August and 10 September in Helsinki (two 3-hour sessions on each day) * These are on-site events aimed for researchers interested in applying for an ERC grant, and the research services staff members are welcome to participate, too. This is an opportunity to read successful ERC grant proposals to see how a proposal might be structured. * Practicalities: * The proposals are available as paper copies. One can preselect up to two proposals in the registration form. Subject to availability, it is possible to read copies of other applications. There will be some recently received new applications available! * Attendance only by registration which is binding! If one signs up, but cannot attend after all, one is requested to cancel the registration before the registration deadline. After the deadline, one is requested to inform Coordinator Henriikka Katila (henriikka.katila(a)aka.fi<mailto:henriikka.katila@aka.fi>) about the cancellation. * The participants must sign the Declaration of Secrecy (attached) when they arrive. - It is desirable to sign the document in advance and to bring a copy to the event. * Applications cannot be taken out of the reading room. Photocopying or taking photos of the applications is not allowed. * PRD is a quiet individual reading session. It does not include tutorials about the ERC. (Hyppää alas lukemaan suomeksi! Eng. versio osoitettu ulkomailta muuttaneille) Hi! The photo gallery of the unit in the corridor is finally starting to be mostly completed, even though many photos are still coming up. If you haven’t had the opportunity to attend the photo session, please contact me. Now I can confess that I was a quite inexperienced photographer with portraits before this. So, if the photos are successful, it’s because each of you has dazzling personality, and my camera just captured it. I’m truly privileged to have met you and experienced all of this. I really hope that those pictures can tell you how wonderful people are here in our unit. Here is the official user guide to help you get the most out of this photo gallery (please don’t skip it even if you tend to skip reading all kind of user guides 😉): How to use the photo gallery: 1. When future makes you feel anxious and overwhelmed, or you feel isolated and invisible, go stand in front of the gallery. 2. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in and out slowly 3 times. 3. Open your eyes and see what you have now – you do have this community, a bunch of people who are in the same mess as you right now or who have experienced the same situation as you in their past. Notice how much you could get support from them and how much you could offer support to them. 4. Go talk to the person whose smile or eyes resonate with you the most, regardless of whether you already know her/him or not. (You’ll find her/him on the map or lab!) Repeat 1-4 if needed. Perhaps I started this photo gallery project just because I wanted to put my own picture on the wall and see concretely myself as a part of the community. But in the end, even more I wanted to make all of us one huge “patchwork quilt” and show you that you are such a super unique and important part of this beautiful quilt. You might think you are replaceable, but it’s not true. Even though the quilt grows with new pieces, I know in my heart that no one is like you. And under this special quilt I feel warm, safe and I can see the light of hope in both bright and dark times – because of you. Thank you for existing 💗 I hope this photo quilt makes you feel cosier in our unit! With love, Erika P.S. Bilsan käytävän henkilökunnan valokuvagalleria alkaa olla melkein valmis, vaikka monet tärkeät kuvat ovat vielä tulossa (osan kanssa vielä kuvaus jatkuu, ja ota yhteyttä, ellet ole saanut tilaisuutta päästä kuvaussessioon!) Nyt voin (ehkä?) rauhallisin mielin tunnustaa, etten ole aiemmin juurikaan kuvannut ihmisiä 😅 Siispä jos kuvat ovat onnistuneet, se johtuu puhtaasti siitä, että jokaisella on häikäisevän upea persoona, ja kamerani vain vangitsi sen. Olen todella etuoikeutettu, kun sain tavata sinut ja kokea tämän kaiken. Toivottavasti kuvat osaavat kertoa puolestani, miten ihania ihmisiä täällä meidän yksikössämme on. Tässä on virallinen käyttöohje, jonka avulla saat maksimaalista hyötyä tästä valokuvagalleriasta (älä skippaa tätä, vaikka normaalisti jättäisitkin lukematta käyttöohjeita 😉): Henkilökunnan valokuvagallerian käyttöohje: 1. Kun tulevaisuus ym. ahdistaa, mene seisomaan valokuvagallerian eteen. 2. Sulje silmäsi ja hengitä hitaasti 3 kertaa sisään ja ulos. 3. Avaa silmäsi ja näe mitä sinulla on nyt – sinulla on tämä yhteisö, joukko ihmisiä, jotka ovat samassa jamassa kuin sinä juuri nyt tai jotka ovat kokeneet joskus aikaisemmin samaa kuin sinä nyt. Huomaa, miten paljon voisit saada tukea heiltä ja miten paljon sinä voisit tarjota tukea heille. 4. Mene juttelemaan henkilön kanssa, jonka hymy tai katse resonoi sinussa nyt eniten riippumatta siitä, tunnetko hänet ennestään tai et. (Löydät hänen työpisteensä mahdollisesti viereisestä kartasta tai labrasta!) Toista 1–4 tarvittaessa. Aloitin tämän valokuvausprojektin ehkä siksi, koska halusin laittaa oman kuvani seinälle ja nähdä itseni konkreettisesti osana tätä yhteisöä. Mutta lopulta sitäkin enemmän halusin tehdä meistä kaikista yhden suuren tilkkutäkin ja näyttää sinulle, että olet todella ainutlaatuinen ja tärkeä osa tätä kaunista torkkupeittoa. Ja kertoa sinulle sen, että tämän täkin alla tunnen lämpöä, turvaa ja toivonvalon olemassaoloa niin aurinkoisena kuin pimeimpänä aikana – sinun ansiostasi. Reminder: the BBQ party of the units TOMORROW Tuesday 10th June 14:00-18:00

Hi everyone! (alla suomeksi) I'd like to remind you that the BBQ party of Ecology and Genetics Unit and Biodiversity Unit to celebrate the end of the spring semester will be TOMORROW, Tuesday, June 10th, starting at 2 pm. Officially, the party will continue until 6 pm, but it is possible to stay after that if e.g., people who arrive later want to stay longer. As mentioned in previous emails, you can arrive and leave the BBQ party at any time you want 🙂 The units provide food and drink (see previous emails). If you want, you can also bring something you want to ear yourself and/or share with others. Also, you can bring your own drinks to make sure you have something to drink during the party. Special thanks for great help with organization and brilliant ideas to: Janne, Petri, Anu, Ida, Reetta, Katya, Emma, Petra, Suvi O., and of course Jouni and Heikki! Tomorrow I will need all of your help in organising the party, especially at the beginning and end. On the other hand, I strongly believe that the spirit of doing things will bring even strangers together in a natural and comfortable way 😊 So, let's try to be active! You can easily find the place; when you arrive at the Botanical Garden, keep going left and you will soon smell the grilled food. Follow your nose if you get lost! (well, probably it won't be ready yet at 2 pm 😅) There is no need to register for the BBQ party. The most important thing is that you show up! I hope to see you at the party 😊 P.S. Lisäksi on vapaaehtoiset nyyttärit, eli voit tuoda jotain mitä haluat itse syödä ja/tai jakaa muiden kanssa. Halutessasi voit tuoda myös omat juomasi, jotta varmasti sinulla on juotavaa koko juhlien ajaksi. Erityiskiitokset suuresta avusta järjestelyhommissa ja loistavista ideoista suunnitteluvaiheessa Jannelle, Petrille, Anulle, Idalle, Reetalle, Katyalle, Emmalle, Petralle, Suville O., ja tietysti Jounille and Heikille! Huomenna tulen tarvitsemaan teidän kaikkien apua juhlien järjestelyssä varsinkin alussa ja lopussa. Toisaalta uskon vahvasti, että tekemisen meininki saattaa puolitutut ja tuntemattomatkin mukavasti yhteen 😊 Ollaan siis aktiivisia! Löydät tapahtumapaikan helposti; kun saavut Kasvitieteelliseen puutarhaan, jatkat vasemmalle niin pian haistat grillin tuoksua. Seuraa nenääsi, jos eksyt! Regarding the BBQ party drinks

Hi everyone! (alla suomeksi) Situation update for the BBQ party drinks! (June 10th 14:00-18:00 at Botanical Garden) Thanks to Heikki and Jouni, we are planning to offer the following drinks on behalf of the units: * wine (red & white) * mineral water (sparkling) * juice made from concentrate * soft drink (e.g., jaffa, pommac, Coca-Cola) * coffee (+ oat milk) * tea (black, green, rooibos) You can also bring your own drink if you want, so that you can make sure you have enough to drink throughout the party 🙂 Best wishes, Erika --------------------------------------- Hei kaikki! RCF winter call to start earlier than before – changes also in application criteria and conditions for use of funding

The Research Council of Finland is adopting a new schedule for the winter call. The 2026 winter call will open in October 2025 and close in November; the call texts will be published in late September. There will also be updates to the application criteria and the terms and conditions for the use of funding. The 2026 winter call will open in October 2025 and close in November; the call texts will be published in late September. There will also be updates to the application criteria and the terms and conditions for the use of funding. The Research Council of Finland (RCF) is changing the schedule of the winter call. The 2026 winter call will open on 15 October 2025 and close on 12 November 2025. The decision schedule will remain unchanged: The funding decisions will be taken by the scientific councils in June 2026, and the funding periods will start on 1 September 2026. The change in the timing of the winter call has been influenced by feedback received from applicants and applicant organisations. A shorter timeframe will also ensure a high-quality review of applications and take into account the new processing phases related to research security with a decreasing number of RCF personnel. Changes to terms of application and use of funding As before, the RCF will process only one application from the same applicant in the winter call. However, in the case of overlapping funding and funding periods, there will be further restrictions, partly also in order to reduce the number of applications. With regard to Academy Project Funding, Academy Research Fellows, heads of Centres of Excellence or subproject principal investigators (PIs) in Centres of Excellence will not be granted Academy Project Funding with overlapping funding periods. In addition, a subproject of an Academy Project consortium will be considered an Academy Project and its PI will not be granted new Academy Project Funding with overlapping funding periods. The PIs of projects or subprojects funded under thematic calls are not subject to these restrictions. There will also be changes to the funding conditions for the salary costs of Academy Project PIs. As before, the PI’s salary costs may only under certain limitations and on justifiable grounds be incorporated into the total project costs. The salary costs of the PI are limited to 1.5 months per funding year, or to a total of six months during the four-year funding period. However, the RCF will introduce more flexibility in the use of funding. With the salary costs reform, the RCF wants to direct project funding to be used more for research carried out in projects and for the salaries of early-career researchers working in them. As for Academy Research Fellowships, the RCF will set a maximum limit for the funding. The aim is to stop the amounts applied for from increasing to a level that would threaten to reduce the overall success rates to unsustainable levels. In addition, with regard to the eligibility for Academy Research Fellowship funding, care will be taken to ensure that the change in the winter call schedule will not cause potential applicants to miss out. The 2026 winter call will not include funding for clinical researchers. The funding instrument for clinical research will be revised, and a new call for applications is expected to open in spring 2026. More information on this will be available in autumn 2025. The revised and confirmed winter call details will be communicated in September in connection with the publication of the call texts on the RCF’s website and other communication channels. The Nessling Foundation offers funding for innovative projects and active researchers that enable or support sustainability transformation that protects natural systems. Natural systems are systems formed by other species and their habitats. These systems support all life, including human societies. Natural systems are threatened by the crossing of planetary boundaries<https://nessling.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a9fa082de64cb8d268da393…>. The research or project does not have to address all aspects of sustainability transformation. Rather, the applicant should clarify how their work contributes to safeguarding natural systems and to understanding and enabling the necessary transformation.
