Course Structure

The course is divided into two parts:

Part 1: Good Laboratory Practices, General Laboratory Safety & Pipetting (1 ECTS)
Open to all Ph.D. students who plan to work in a laboratory and need training in general laboratory safety, good laboratory practices, and pipetting. In Part 1, students will learn to:

Design their laboratory work while considering good laboratory practices and laboratory safety.
Pipette using the direct pipetting technique.
Explain what a good laboratory notebook should contain.

Part 2: Practical Training in the Molecular Laboratory (2 ECTS)
Open to Ph.D. students who need hands-on experience in a molecular laboratory setting. In Part 2, students will learn to:

Use the most common equipment in a molecular laboratory (pipette, scale, autoclave, centrifuge, PCR device, electrophoresis apparatus).
Plan and carry out the most common tasks in a molecular laboratory (DNA isolation, PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis).
Assess the success of their work.
Keep a laboratory notebook of their work

Who Can Apply?
The course is primarily intended for 1st-year Ph.D. students, but master students and post-docs who lack Finnish laboratory courses/safety training are also welcome.

Participation Requirements
Part 1 can be completed independently. However, if you wish to attend Part 2, completing Part 1 is mandatory. Students will be selected based on their motivation letter.
