Dear colleagues,
don’t forget today’s Biology Thursday seminar - 1.4.2021, 12:15 (zoom link below):
Dr. Heini Kujala, Finnish Natural History Museum LUOMUS on
“What (biodiversity) data do we need for conservation plans?”
Abstract
Conservation plans delineate areas that should be targeted for conservation actions in order to halt biodiversity loss. Such maps are frequently used for, for example, to guide conservation
programs and land use decision-making. Conservation plans are naturally underpinned by biodiversity data, and traditionally when building conservation plans great effort has been focused on perfecting the accuracy and breadth of data such as species records
used as inputs for the plan. What is perhaps less well understood is that, because of the nature of spatial planning, some data are far more influential for planning outcomes than others and that our decisions on what data are included can strongly define
what the plan looks like. In this talk I discuss how biodiversity data, and other relevant data such as information on costs, threats and habitat condition, shape conservation plans and what aspects we should spend time on when gathering data for conservation
planning analyses.
