Date and time: 18th of March, 16:00-19:00
Location: LO124 Areena, Linnanmaa Campus

Welcome to CinemANTS event!
We are screening The Forest's Archipelago, a documentary film by Clément Couturier and Caroline Lelievre, after which there will be a panel discussion with one of the filmmakers, researchers, a featured forest owner and a tv-journalist. This is the film's premier in Finland. This documentary has been shot last year in Oulu area and in the national park Iso-Syöte with the participation of Oulu University researchers.

Finland is an ocean Forest. Most of it are well-aligned trees. In there, encompassing small patches of isolated old-growth forests with biodiversity. These sanctuaries form an archipelago of fragile, precious islands. But on these islands, the life is difficult for animal species such as the Siberian flying squirrel or the willow tit to survive as their ecosystems shrink due to clear-cutting and land use. Fortunately, Finns are becoming aware of the situation inherited from the past, and a new generation of small forest owners are rethinking how the forest is used.

Cinema is a powerful medium for the exploration of the changing human-environment relations at a time of biodiversity and ecological crises. The CinemANTS series takes us on a journey across styles and geographies to reflect on how we can use the moving image to celebrate the enchantment of the natural world, express the grief in its loss, and find a different way of living in the changing lands and landscapes. Organized as part of the Biodiverse Anthropocenes programme, CinemANTS brings renowned documentary makers to Oulu to share their vision and expertise.

We hope to see you there!
