Title: Understanding Tourist-Kea (Nestor notabilis) Interactions: Implications for Behaviour Change Interventions.
Abstract: This study examines what drives tourists’ (ir)responsible behaviors toward the endangered kea bird (Nestor notabilis) in Aotearoa New Zealand, using the values-beliefs-norms (VBN) theory and the Capability-Opportunity-Motivation and Behavior (COM-B) model. A mixed-methods approach was used: interviews with 36 tourists revealed mostly responsible behavior, followed by a survey of 1,638 tourists to identify different behavioral segments. Findings show that most tourists act responsibly, but differences exist depending on their values and motivations. Based on the results, the study proposes interventions to encourage responsible interactions with kea.
