Pillar II funds top-down Research and Innovation activities of large consortia. Pillar II is organised in six clusters, which individually and together will promote interdisciplinary,
cross-sectoral, cross-policy, cross-border and international cooperation: 1. Health; 2. Culture, Creativity and Inclusive Societies; 3. Civil Security for Society; 4. Digital, Industry & Space; 5. Climate, Energy and Mobility; and 6. Food, Bioeconomy, Natural
Resources, Agriculture & Environment. A consortium is comprised of at least 3 partners from 3 different countries. This includes partners coming from member states and/or associated countries. However usually a larger consortium is expected.
Research and project services offer enhanced support for researchers, who plan to coordinate a
Research and Innovation Action (RIA) proposal with call deadlines in February 2023 – April 2023 in Horizon Europe calls (Clusters 1-6).
The support consists of training, partner search, grant-writing services, budgeting, open science, etc. Also, external services for proposal review and graphic design services for infographics will be provided. Read here about
the experiences of Prof. Shenghong Yang, who participated in the pilot support process in 2021 and received funding.
All researchers planning to submit a proposal for the Horizon Europe RIA calls in February – April 2023 as coordinators can express their interest to be included in the
support process by answering a short Webropol questionnaire by

All information provided will be kept confidential. The applicants who are selected for the support process commit themselves to take part in the support process for the proposal preparation and submit their final proposal to a call in 2023. Selected applicants
will be invited to a Horizon Europe online training and a kick-off meeting to go through the support process and schedule in November 2022.
Selection will be made based on the availability of services and the readiness level of the proposal preparation.

Strategisen tutkimuksen (STN) teema vuodelle 2023 päätetty /
Theme for strategic research (SRC) in 2023 decided
The Finnish Government has decided that Just Green Transition will be the theme of strategic research programmes to be launched in 2023. The cross-cutting
priority in the programmes is resilience
The Strategic Research Council (SRC) is an independent body established within the Academy of Finland tasked with providing funding for long-term excellent research that is aimed at finding solutions to the major
challenges facing Finnish society. In addition, strategic research strengthens the renewal and competitiveness of business and industry and supports the development of working life and the public sector.
SRC Chair Anu Kaukovirta says that the SRC is preparing to open two six-year research programmes on the new theme. “We find ourselves in the midst
of a green transformation. Long-term and multidisciplinary research projects that link different disciplines and perspectives in an unprejudiced manner can build a far-reaching knowledge base for accelerating the green transformation and promoting its fairness. This
applies to both the energy transition, resource issues and societal solutions required by the green transformation,” Kaukovirta says.
Strategic research funding is intended for extensive, multidisciplinary research consortia that carry out research with an emphasis on active interaction and engagement with knowledge
users.Strategic research strengthens societal problem-solving capacity and improves the knowledge base of decision-making.From the projects to be funded, the SRC expects active interaction between knowledge producers and knowledge users, covering the entire
life cycle of the research, in order to disseminate high-quality research to knowledge users across society.
The call text and guidelines will be published in
early November (TBC) on the Academy of Finland’s website. The first call stage will be open until early January 2023.
