Gene expression evolution during adaptation to heat and drought stress in Tribolium castaneum
Understanding the genetic basis of trait variation and adaptation is central to evolutionary biology. In my talk, I will present the results of an experimental evolution experiment with the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, in which we adapted replicated lines of the beetle to heat and drought stress. We studied the evolutionary changes in individual fitness, gene expression and allele frequencies with control crosses in transplant experiments after 20 generations of adaptation. Thanks to estimates of genetic variance and covariance of fitness and gene expression, we could show that gene expression evolved as predicted from estimates of genetic selection. Our approach allows us to better understand the genetics of adaptation by linking evolutionary changes in allele frequencies and gene expression with selection intensities and gene properties such as centrality in co-expression networks and pleiotropy. Overall, we found that genes with central positions in co-expression networks were under stronger selection, evolved more and where more likely to carry expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL).
