Dr. Tuomas Hämälä, University of Minnesota Twin Cities, on What can the genetic and genomic architecture of adaptation tell about evolution?
A key determinant of evolutionary responses is the genetic and genomic architecture of adaptive traits: i.e., the control of phenotypes by one or many loci, the interactions between alleles, positions of loci in relation to genomic features, and structural arrangements. Using multi-omics data from two plant species (Theobroma cacao, Ambrosia artemisiifolia), I present how two contrasting features of the genetic architecture, polygenicity (multiple loci controlling a single phenotype) and pleiotropy (a single locus controlling multiple phenotypes), contribute to adaptive differentiation. Then, using newly assembled de novo genomes from T. cacao, I present how genomic structural variants both constrain and facilitate adaptation in this tropical tree species.
