Notice on possible post-doc position on examining and resolving agricultural damage caused by barnacle geese

Employer: Natural Resources Institute Finland, Latokartanonkaari 9, PL 2, 00791 Helsinki, Finland

Project description: Over-migrating barnacle geese (Branta leucopsis) are causing severe damage in Finland to agriculture by eating crop plants. The aim of the project is to examine the effectiveness of goose accommodation fields and different repelling methods to decrease the damage by conducting controlled field experiments and monitoring the behavioural and numerical response of barnacle geese. We also will examine the effects of repelling methods on breeding field bird community and the behaviour of migratory resting bird species (waders, ducks, other goose species) that are sharing the same fields with barnacle geese and therefore may be disturbed by repelling methods. Of the breeding birds, special focus is in the breeding success of lapwings (Vanellus vanellus) and curlews (Numenius arquata).

Duties: The recruited post-doc is responsible to independently and jointly with other members of the research team examine the research questions of the project. Duties involve field work, data managing, statistical analyses of the data and composing scientific manuscripts.

Qualifications and selection criteria: Applicants must have a PhD in ecology, evolutionary biology, statistical modeling or related areas. The recruited post-doc is expected to be enterprising and have excellent English communication skills, as well as experience programming in the R statistical environment. Following qualifications and experience are considered as an advantage: managing and analyzing large data sets, field experimentation, experience about field work in birds, bird identification skills, statistical modelling, experience in applying GIS-data on biological systems.

Duration and terms of employment: The start date of the position is May 1st 2022 and is until the end of the 2022. Extension of the project is possible but is currently uncertain. If position can be filled, the recruited person will be chosen among those who have expressed interest for the position. Normal recruitment process will not be applied.
