PRIOR NOTIFICATION: Preregistration for the applicants of Kvantum Institute research projects 2021 - 2024 will open in May 2019
This is an important prior notification for all principal investigators (PIs) planning to participate in the upcoming Kvantumhttps://www.oulu.fi/kvantum research project call for 2021-2024. Those who are planning to apply are requested to preregister according to the instructions given later in May.
The preregistration material is due to the selection process of independent experts for the evaluation panel by the Academy of Finland. Only PIs preregistered are eligible.
The proposed research projects should represent well-focused research of high international quality within the University's strategic focus areas of Earth and near-space system and environmental changehttps://www.oulu.fi/university/focusarea/earth-and-near-space-system-and-environmental-change or Creating sustainability through materials and systemshttps://www.oulu.fi/university/focusarea/creating-sustainability-through-materials-and-systems coordinated by Kvantum Insitute.
The Principal Investigator(s) (PI) should: - be recognized in their field of science - have high-quality scientific publications and - have demonstrated ability to gain notable external funding for research.
The PI(s) and other researchers in the project should be affiliated with the University of Oulu, and the team must work at the University of Oulu; the project PI(s) has or negotiates an affiliation with the University. This has to be clearly indicated in the actual application. Only one application per researcher is accepted.
The application process includes two stages: 1. Preregistration 2. Call for projects.
Preregistration documents will include:
1. Information sheet (responsible PI and other possible PIs) 2. Abstract (max. 3000 characters), describing the key aspects of research plan. The abstract (i.e. the summary of the research plan) should provide an overview of the scientific content. 3. List of publications: Selection of the PI's (the responsible project leader's) and the other PIs' most important publications in terms of the research plan
Please note: The actual call (including research plan for 2021 - 2024) for the projects will open in autumn 2019.
The preregistration material is used only for the selection of evaluator candidates by the Academy of Finland and it is not part of the evaluation process and its materials, and it is not provided to the evaluator panel. Those preregistered may change the type of application (a research consortium or an individual PI) for the actual call, but all names should be known for the evaluator pool selection process.

Yellow Research Workshop: Writing Successful ERC Proposals 14.6. at 8:30 - 13:30

Note ! The training is important for those who intend to apply for an ERC grant. In this workshop, we will discuss the ERC and panel specifics for the scientific proposal and Principal Investigator. The deadlines for submitting a proposal is in August, 2019 (Advanced), October 2019 (Starting) early February 2020 (Consolidator). The workshop aims to provide researchers with a good understanding of: the evaluation criteria and how to analyse them; what makes an excellent PI according to the reviewers of the different domains/panels; how to write a competitive scientific proposal considering panel specifics and type of project.
Focus of the workshop will be on the ERC scientific proposal. Therefore, the participants are expected to familiarise themselves with the general ERC participation rules and eligibility criteria beforehand. Scientific Proposal
We use the project template to explain per paragraph 'state-of the-art and objectives', 'methodology' and 'resources':
- What needs to be addressed for the in depth reviewer
- How to address this: What kind of conceptualizing is needed to tell the story
We will detail how to address: 1) groundbreaking nature and ambition 2) the high gain and high risk balance and the link to feasibility of the scientific approach 3) the envisioned impact on future research and possibilities of utility
4) sound project plan and structure with intermediate goals and back-up plans.
