Professor Anne Tolvanen from Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE) will give a talk titled "Climate and resource smart peatland use- do we improve biodiversity by compromising?"

Anne will discuss her research: “In Finland, almost  60% of peatland area has been drained for forestry. This had led to the degradation of biodiversity, loading of nutrients to watercourses, and emission of greenhouse gases (GHG). High pressure is still targeted to these ecosystems by e.g. forest, bioenergy and peat industries. At the same time, there is a need to safeguard and improve their biodiversity and promote the sequestration of GHG to combat climate change. Can several targets be reached simultaneously, and if yes, how? We tested this question by using empirical country-wide spatial data 1) to estimate and predict the impact of seven peatland uses on the biodiversity, GHG balances and nutrient loading to watercourses, and 2) to numerically optimize cost efficient land uses so that benefits from biodiversity and ecosystem services are safeguarded. I will show that there is no simple answer to the optimization of peatland uses due to the numerous trade-offs between biodiversity, ecosystem services and economic benefits.”
