Hi all,
if we are entitled to propose laboratory devices not related to DNA work, I would propose a new (orbital) shaker, such as in the attached link
https://us.vwr.com/store/product/4901161/vwr-advanced-orbital-shakers-model-10000
Currently, we have only one really small functional reciprocal shaker that, in my opinion, does not do the job well. Firstly, it is small, so you cannot fit several samples in at once, which limits
the workflow. Secondly, the mixing speed is not reliable and I am just waiting for the day, when the shaker stops functioning altogether. This shaker is used for instance in soil nutrient and enzyme extractions and during the past weeks it has, again, been
used by many people. The shaker locates in the downstairs lab with furnaces.
Besides me (Jeff Welker’s group) I have seen many FM students using the shaker but I cannot provide any answer regarding how many research groups are/would be using the shaker.
The shaker in the link is ~7500 € and I found this with one click. I’m sure more models and cheaper ones are available.

Maria Väisänen

Subject: [Biolaitos] renewal needs of local infra
Hello biologists of our unit,
Last Friday, in our unit meeting, we shortly discussed about the possibility to modernize our local infrastructure, particularly the DNA lab, provided the Profi 6 application is successful. We are going to budget some
money for this purpose in our proposal.
It has already been suggested that we should buy a fragment analyzer. It also has been suggested that our ABI sequencer should be updated and that some more climate chambers should be machined.
I am now asking for more proposals. What equipment would be critical to keep our labs fully functional? If you like to propose something, please also justify this need by telling what this equipment does, how many research
groups will use it, and how expensive it is.
Note that this is a rare possibility to renew our labs. Also note that this does not concern small devices such as pipettes, and also not extremely expensive, such as some NGS platforms (Illumina etc.).
Best wishes,
Marko
