Dear colleagues,

this week’s Biology Thursday Seminar, 18th April, 12:15 (zoom link below)  will be given by
Dr. Tuomas Kankaanpää, Univ. Oulu / Ecology and Genetics research unit, on

“The ups and downs of insect herbivores in a changing climate.”

We know a lot about how climate change alters for example distributions or phenologies of individual species. Much less is known about how complex biological systems, communities, food webs and ecosystems are affected as a result. In my talk, I will present my PhD work, done in the university of Helsinki, in which I studied how climatic conditions affect Arctic food webs, specifically ones consisting of a primary producer (Dryas spp.), a dominant moth (Sympistis), and a community of parasitoids wasps and flies. To make stronger conclusions based on observational data, we collected data both on a land-scape scale and a geographical scale, and, where possible, verified our findings also in a true time series. We found the different host groups and their respective parasitoids to be favoured by different climatic conditions. Additionally, we found parasitism strategy, as defined by idiobiontism or koinobiontism, to be a good predictor of parasitoid responses to climatic condition in the Arctic.

In addition to arctic herbivores and parasitoids, I will briefly introduce the work I am involved with here in Oulu. Again, I am investigating how lepidopteran herbivores are affected by climatic conditions and whether those effects cascade in the food web, this time focusing on insectivorous birds as the higher trophic level. We will make full use of existing time-series data from Finland to see, if the breeding time food resource that is moth larvae has changed over the last few decades and how have bird communities changed in response.
