Dear colleagues,
Biology Thursday seminar continues on zoom 20th Nov, 12:15, with Dr. Jenni Lehtimäki from Finnish Environment Institute SYKE, on
Biodiversity and children’s immunological health
Biodiversity is essential for human health and wellbeing in numerous ways. It provides ecosystem services that support human existence such as pollination, clean water and air, nutrient cycles, and control of pathogen outbreaks. Accumulating evidence suggests large importance of natural environments for human neurological health including mental wellbeing. Yet, nature and biodiversity can also be related to human immunological health. Accumulating evidence shows linkages between natural environments, microbial exposures, and immune-mediated outcomes such as asthma. However, evidence is still scarce and partially mixed. Moreover, biodiversity exposures relevant for human immune system can also be other than microbial species, which has been overlooked previously. In this presentation, I will present the current evidence regarding the biodiversity hypothesis of health, focusing on my own past and current research.
