Dear all,
Suvi (Ponnikas) and I are teaching the Evolutionary Genomics and Genomic Methods course this autumn. The course kicks off today, and during the first session, we’ll do a short warm-up activity called a “Genome Walk” starting at 11 AM with the student group where different kinds of taxonomic and genome knowledge would be valuable.
The idea is to walk to the Botanical Garden and back (approx. 20–30 minutes, starting in the front of Campus ICT), identifying local species or taxonomic groups for which genomic data (e.g., reference genome, transcriptome) is available. We don’t necessarily need to see the species; stories about local species you’ve collected or observed would be very valuable to share. It would be fantastic to cover a variety of taxonomic groups. I know some plants (though I could use help with species identification), and Suvi knows birds.
Everyone is welcome to join! This is a great opportunity to meet and share your expertise with the students, and with us :) The format is very informal. Marko (Mutanen) has already kindly agreed to join. Huge thanks Marko!
We’d especially appreciate contributions from those with knowledge of microorganisms, fungi, non-bird vertebrates, and aquatic species.
If you're interested, just send me a quick email with information on your expertise and come along for the walk.
Thanks in advance! Best wishes, Tiina
