Dear colleagues,
biology Thursday seminar continues 7th April, 12:15 (zoom link below) with
Assoc. prof. Carita Lindstedt-Kareksela from the Dept. of Forest Sciences, Univ. Helsinki, on "Group living and cooperation within a group in a haplodiploid pine sawflies" Group members can benefit from the dilution of predation risk or predator confusion and cooperative joint effort in antipredator defence such as deterring the predator with defensive secretions. Many of these cooperative defence strategies are based on public goods i.e. individually costly acts that benefits all the group members. However, public goods are susceptible to exploitation. In my talk I will present studies testing the cost:benefit ratio of cooperation within a group in immature life-stages. I will also present some new results of how group size affects life-history traits and cooperative behaviour in a semisocial chemically defended pine sawflies (Neodiprion sertifer and Diprion pini). See you online on Thursday, Heikki
