Welcome to the autumn 2024 ethics seminar on Tuesday, October 8 at 12.00-16.00 to Linnanmaa Tellus Backstage. Artificial intelligence (AI) ethics here refers to ethical principles that guide us when we develop and use smart technologies. AI ethics builds upon the values and ethical principles accepted by the academic community and larger society. These values and principles should also guide the researchers, developers and users of modern day advanced smart AI technologies. Ethical questions that arise from AI include, for example, how our data is used, who is responsible for decisions made by machines, errors or unforeseen consequences in systems, or whether, for example, facial recognition is used in a way that respects human rights. More broadly defined issues relating to AI ethics also concern how we want to use emerging technologies in different contexts of our life-worlds. Everyone clearly needs AI literacy, and understanding ethical issues is an essential part of that. AI related research requires contributions from various if not all fields of science and would benefit if conducted in a multidisciplinary manner. Ethical understanding is needed for future challenges and increasing understanding of the operating principles, limitations, and possibilities of AI methods.
