University of Oulu and the Arctic Six announce a call for one Master / PhD student to participate in the One Ocean II Expedition with the associated ECTS-credited module Arctic Future Pathfinders – A journey through the Northwest Passage

This unique science and training opportunity will last up to 5 weeks from August – October 2025 aboard the three-masted sailing vessel S/S Statsraad Lehmkuhl.  The expedition and associated course is organised by UiT - The Arctic University of Norway and under the Arctic Six alliance. The University of Oulu is able to offer one free place to a Masters or PhD student to join, gaining 10 ECTS with the course “Arctic Future Pathfinders – A journey through the Northwest Passage”.

The course is designed to be project-based and with an overarching focus on developing inter- and transdisciplinary skills, critical futures-thinking competences, personal reflections, and collaborative practice. Indigenous and traditional knowledge and perspectives, conventional science, and societal challenges at large are integrated in the course content. 

Students and doctoral candidates must be socially engaged, physical and mentally robust, curious, and above all, wish to be part of the solution to major societal challenges related to climate change and sustainable use of the ocean (in a broad sense). The expedition will be challenging: moderate to high levels of fitness are a requirement, understanding that the ocean and conditions will be rough and accommodation tight: cabins will be shared with other students. All course participants will also be active sailing trainees, fully participating in the daily routines of the crew and so required to play an active role in the day-to-day running of this magnificent traditional three-masted sailing ship.  All course participants will be involved in research activities regarding teaching and learning onboard as well as numerous outreach activities.
