The Academy of Finland is preparing significant changes to its call schedules and to the review of applications. The next application round for Academy Project Funding, Academy Research Fellowships and Clinical Researcher Funding will open in December 2023, not in September. The deadline for applications is in January 2024, and the funding decisions will be made in spring 2024. The Academy is also introducing a change that concerns review panels: as of the January 2024 call, applicants will choose the most relevant panel for their application.

The Fulbright-University of Oulu Scholar will conduct research, or conduct research and teach, at any of the eight faculties, four focus institutes, or regional units of the University of Oulu. The Fulbright-University of Oulu Scholar Award is jointly funded by the University of Oulu and the Fulbright Finland Foundation.

The award is available for visits of 3-9 months, and it includes a monthly grant of 4 500 EUR, a one-time travel allowance of 1 800 USD, a residence permit allowance, housing, work facilities, administrative support, orientation, and support services.

MARIE Sklodowska Curie: Postdoctoral Fellowshipshttps://marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu/actions/postdoctoral-fellowships The next call will open 12 April, DL September 2023 The objective of PFs is to support researchers’ careers and foster excellence in research. The Postdoctoral Fellowships action targets researchers holding a PhD who wish to carry out their research activities abroad, acquire new skills and develop their careers. PFs help researchers gain experience in other countries, disciplines and non-academic sectors.

There are 2 types of Postdoctoral Fellowships:

European Postdoctoral Fellowships. They are open to researchers moving within Europe or coming to Europe from another part of the world to pursue their research career. These fellowships take place in an EU Member State or Horizon Europe Associated Country and can last between 1 and 2 years. Researchers of any nationality can apply.

Global Postdoctoral Fellowships. They fund the mobility of researchers outside Europe. The fellowship lasts between 2 to 3 years, of which the first 1 to 2 years will be spent in a non-associated Third Country, followed by a mandatory return phase of 1 year to an organisation based in an EU Member State or Horizon Europe Associated Country. Only nationals or long-term residents of the EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries can apply.

Support for ERC Starting Grant and Synergy Grant 2024

European Research Council Starting Grants (ERC StG)https://erc.europa.eu/funding/starting-grants are designed to support excellent Principal Investigators with 2-7 years of experience since the award of their PhD. StG Call 2024 is expected to open in July (DL October 2023).

ERC Synergy Grantshttps://erc.europa.eu/funding/synergy-grants (ERC SyG) support a group of two to maximum four Principal Investigators working together and bringing different skills and resources to tackle ambitious research problems. The PIs can be from same or different institutions and no specific eligibility window regarding the academic age is required. SyG Call 2024 is expected to open in July (DL November 2023).

The University of Oulu wants to encourage its researchers to apply for ERC and will provide a support scheme for selected applicants to prepare for the 2024 Call.
