Course overview: The course offers basic knowledge on brain anatomy and development, and gives an update of latest research findings and methods in the field. The translational aspects from mouse model-derived data to human disease are also considered. The course is aimed for students and researchers in medicine, biochemistry and molecular medicine, biology and other relevant fields. The lectures are open for all interested. Obs! This course from patent databases is in Finnish but the similar course will be arranged in English next spring (3rd May)! Patentit sisältävät suuren määrän tietoa, jota ei läheskään aina löydy tieteellisistä julkaisuista. Kun suunnittelet uutta tutkimusprojektia, selvitä artikkelien lisäksi mitä patenteista löytyy. Tee vaikutus rahoittajaan osoittamalla, että myös patenttien sisältämä tieto on hallussasi hakiessasi tutkimusrahoitusta. Näin voit osoittaa, että olet tutkimassa jotain uutta. Tule kurssille ja opi hyödyntämään patenttitietokantoja. Saat myös vinkkejä siitä, miten niitä kannattaa lukea. Kurssilla opitaan näitä asioita tekemisen kautta. Place: Leena Palotie Auditorium, Kontinkangas campus Speaker: Dr. Sakari Vanharanta, University of Cambridge, UK Title of the talk: "Transcriptional control of cancer progression" About the speaker: Dr. Sakari Vanharanta studied medicine at the University of Helsinki and completed his PhD work on human tumour genetics. He has worked on the molecular mechanisms of metastatic cancer progression at the laboratory of Joan Massagué at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York. In 2014 Vanharanta joined the MRC Cancer Unit, UK (UK Medical Research Council, School of Clinical Medicine of the University of Cambridge). Vanharanta's research focuses on transcriptional determinants of cancer progression: exploring the molecular mechanisms that modulate the phenotypic output of tumour-initiating transcriptional pathways in support of cancer progression and metastasis. Understanding the origins and nature of metastatic cancer will provide insights into the fundamental requirements of cancer cell states and help identify functionally relevant biomarkers as well as therapeutic targets.
