At 14 o’clock in F202, he will be giving a talk, titled: Nutritional epidemiology – Just fodder for the media or a valuable tool for nutrition research? Update to previous e-mail: coffee and snacks will be served In his talk, Dr Virtanen will be covering the present state of nutritional epidemiology, some recent controversies and how to put the field into proper context. We’ll be getting a great peek behind the flashy headlines and what to think when eggs are bad one week and good the other. He will also talk about his current research projects. Dr Virtanen has 20 years of experience in epidemiological and intervention studies in human nutrition, with the main interest in the prevention of cardiometabolic diseases. He is also a PI or a co-PI of several vitamin D supplementation trials, including one of the large vitamin D trials in the world, the Finnish Vitamin D Trial (FIND). He has also studied dietary fats and cholesterol. The title of her talk is "The EVB-method: in silico approach for understanding the mechanism of enzyme catalysis". This presentation is also organized and funded by the Health and Biosciences Doctorol Program (HBS-DP) of the University of Oulu Graduate School. Coffee and pulla will be offered before the lecture. Dr. Marsavelski is a group leader and Associated Professor and comes from the Department of Chemistry, University of Zagreb, Croatia. Her research interests are related to computational biochemistry and enzymology (http://gruic.chem.pmf.unizg.hr/people/professors/#marsavelski). She uses the EVB (empirical valence bond) biocomputing method developed by Arieh Warshel to study reaction mechanism of enzymes. This research field is highly relevant, given the need to develop more sustainable methods to produce the compounds that are needed by the society. In principle this can be achieved by engineering suitable enzymes. We initiated the seminar series during the ERDF StrucBioCat project (2012-2014; http://www.oulu.fi/biocenter/strucbiocat). These lectures have been given by scientists, either from academia or from biotech companies. The aim of these lectures is to become better informed about recent developments in the biocatalysis research field and to get more collaboration between the biotech companies and the university researchers. We are further improving our infrastructure with help of a new ERDF project "New technological solutions to enhance Biocenter Oulu services" -AutoBioCat (2018-2020) (https://www.oulu.fi/biocenter/erdf/autobiocat, contact person Outi Lampela). The improved infrastructure increases method development options and is a response to growing sample numbers. This infrastructure shall be introduced a bit later during this Spring season. This is also a great opportunity for biotech companies to see our facilities at FBMM. We will be happy to provide a guided tour to show our updated research infrastructure. Kurssilla ei ole opettajaa, vaan opiskelijat perehtyvät materiaaliin omatoimisesti Moodle-oppimisympäristössä ja suorittavat tentin. Osallistujalla tulee olla voimassa olevat HAKA-tunnukset (eli käytännössä yliopiston käyttäjätunnus ja salasana). Opiskelija voi alkaa perehtyä opiskelumateriaaliin omatoimisesti (luentotallenteet ja kirjallinen materiaali) heti kurssialueelle kirjauduttuaan. Kirjautumisohjeet lähetetään kurssille valituille ilmoittautumisajan päätyttyä sähköpostitse. Kurssin osallistujamäärä on rajattu (50). [In English below] Arvoisa tutkija, Kartoitamme jälleen vuoden 2019 tehtyjä apuraha-hakemuksia. Mikäli teit hakemuksen (myös semmoisen joka ei tullut rahoitetuksi) rahoituksesta jota olisi käytetty yliopiston tilien kautta, ilmoitatko siitä meille. Yritämme saada kokonaiskuvan siitä paljonko meiltä lähti hakemuksia eri hakuihin. Tämä kysely koskee sekä Lääketieteellistä tiedekuntaa, Biokemiaa ja Molekyylilääketiedettä sekä erillislaitoksia ja fokusinstituutteja. Meille riittää jos ilmoitat mistä hait, hakemuksen nimi ja budjetti. Meille ei tarvitse ilmoittaa Suomen akatemian tai EU:n hakemuksia, ne löytyvät suoraan järjestelmästä. Call open: Proof-of-Concept (PoC) funding PoC (Proof-of-Concept)- funding aims to execute the first implementation of an invention or idea. This way you can show that the invention/idea works as planned. Funding aims to increase possibilities of creating research based businesses. PoC funding is the internal funding of University of Oulu. This year also City of Oulu is a partial funder. The call is now open. You can apply for funding as long as it is still available. Sakari Alhopuron säätiön apurahat haettavissa 1.–29.2.2020 Vuonna 2020 Sakari Alhopuron säätiön apurahat suunnataan lääketiedettä sekä monitieteistä ympäristötutkimusta, luonnon monimuotoisuutta ja luonnonsuojelua edistävään tutkimukseen. Apurahoja myönnetään lääketieteessä tai luonnontieteissä tohtorin tutkinnon suorittaneille tutkijoille, jotta heillä olisi mahdollisuus korkeatasoisen tutkimustyön jatkamiseen. Apurahat myönnetään tutkimushankkeille ja/tai henkilökohtaisina työskentelyapurahoina. Säätiöltä haettavan rahoituksen kokonaissumma voi olla enintään 60 000 euroa. Apurahoja voidaan myöntää myös ulkomailla työskentelyyn. Tutkimushankkeiden arvioinnissa kiinnitetään huomiota tutkimusaiheen ja -suunnitelman lisäksi aikaisemmin tehtyyn tutkimukseen ja tutkijan mahdollisuuksiin toteuttaa tutkimuksensa.
